Usually, you need a Microsoft account to play Minecraft. Minecraft’s account guide says one is required for all versions. The official free trial is a documented exception for offline play: it works without an internet connection, but online servers are disabled. That does not establish that every purchased copy can launch offline after sign-in, on every device or edition.
Can you play Minecraft without being signed in?
Minecraft’s account guide says, “Since 25 July 2022, all players need a Microsoft account to play all versions of Minecraft.” The guide was published by Minecraft Staff on June 5, 2023. This is the general account requirement; it does not mean that an account alone gives you access to the full game. A signed-in player who does not own Minecraft can choose a time-limited demo or buy the game. Minecraft’s account guide describes sign-in on PC, consoles, and mobile devices.
Keep three questions separate: whether you have a Microsoft account, whether you are signed in when launching or playing, and whether you have an internet connection. A free Microsoft account is not a game purchase, and owning Minecraft does not remove the stated account requirement.
Can you play Minecraft offline?
Free trial
The official Minecraft free-trial page explicitly says the trial can be played offline. Online multiplayer servers are disabled, though LAN multiplayer is allowed. The Java and Bedrock trials each provide approximately 100 minutes of in-game time—about five in-game days—and Minecraft says duration may vary slightly by device. This time limit applies to the trial, not to a purchased game.

Purchased game
Minecraft’s account guide states the Microsoft-account requirement, but the official pages cited here do not establish one universal rule for offline relaunching an already purchased game. The result may depend on the edition, device, launcher, and account state. Do not assume that signing in once guarantees that your copy will always start offline; check the guidance for your platform and edition before relying on offline access.
Can I play Minecraft without a Microsoft account?
The account guide says a Microsoft account is required to play all versions. On PC, Minecraft’s instructions describe signing into the launcher with a Microsoft account. On Xbox, the console profile supplies the account; on PlayStation, Switch, Android, iOS, and Kindle Fire, the guide describes account sign-in steps. Having a local world file does not substitute for game ownership or account entitlement.

This matters especially for former Mojang account holders. Mojang account migration ended on December 18, 2023. Minecraft Support says former Mojang account holders need to purchase Java Edition using a Microsoft account to continue playing. Support notes that Java single-player worlds may remain stored on a hard drive; that does not mean the old account still grants access to the game. See Minecraft Support’s Mojang account and migration guidance.
Can you play Minecraft LAN without an account?
LAN means multiplayer over a local network; it does not promise an account-free way to play. Minecraft Help’s Bedrock LAN instructions require supported devices with a current game version on the same network. The host starts a world, enables multiplayer and visibility to LAN players in its settings, and other players join the LAN-listed world. Console online subscriptions may still be needed. The instructions do not say that LAN bypasses account requirements in every situation. See Minecraft Help’s Bedrock LAN guide.

What do you need for Minecraft multiplayer?
Signing in is only one part of online play. Minecraft Help lists edition compatibility, a current release, and a stable internet and/or LAN connection among the requirements. Consoles may also require an active online subscription, and consoles and mobile devices require Microsoft-account linking or sign-in. Check Minecraft Help’s multiplayer requirements for the relevant platform.
