Yes. You can play Nintendo Switch local multiplayer without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The subscription requirement generally applies to playing over the internet, not to multiplayer on one console, nearby consoles connected by local wireless, or supported LAN play. The game determines which modes are available and what systems, game copies, and controllers players need.
What counts as local multiplayer?
- Same-console multiplayer: Players share one Switch and, when the game supports it, one copy of the game. They may play on a shared screen or in split-screen; the title determines the format and controller setup. Nintendo notes that features such as split-screen vary by game in its Switch FAQ.
- Local wireless: Nearby Switch systems connect directly for multiplayer. This does not inherently require internet access or Nintendo Switch Online. The game sets the player limit and whether each person needs a system and game copy.
- LAN play: Some games support play across systems on a local network. It is different from internet multiplayer, and setup requirements depend on the game.
- Online multiplayer: Players connect over the internet. Many games require Nintendo Switch Online for online co-op or competitive play, though some online games are exceptions.
How game requirements differ
These Nintendo examples show why you should check the specific game rather than assume every Switch title has the same local player limit or setup.
| Game | Local options and limits | What players need | Online membership |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mario Kart 8 Deluxe | Wireless play supports 2–8 players, with up to 2 per console; LAN play supports up to 12 players. It also offers shared-console and online modes. | Wireless and LAN play use multiple consoles; the guide describes the mode-specific setup. | Required for online play; not for local wireless or LAN play. |
| Super Smash Bros. Ultimate | Local wireless supports 2–4 players. | Nintendo’s local wireless instructions describe one game card per console. | Required for online play; not for local wireless play. |
| Animal Crossing: New Horizons | Up to 4 people can play simultaneously on one console and one copy. Local wireless is also supported. | Same-console play may require additional accessories; local wireless requires one console and one copy per player. | Required for online play, which also requires a Nintendo Account. |
Those player counts apply to the named games and modes, not to Switch games generally. Nintendo’s instructions and product information are the best place to confirm current requirements for the title you plan to play.
Check what your planned session requires
- Choose the connection: Decide whether everyone will share one console, use nearby consoles with local wireless, connect over a local network, or play over the internet.
- Confirm the game mode and player limit: Check the game’s Nintendo eShop listing or Nintendo support instructions. A game may support one local mode but not another.
- Count systems and copies: Check whether players can share one console and copy or whether local wireless requires a console and game copy for each player.
- Check controllers: Make sure you have enough compatible controllers for the mode and number of players. Additional accessories are needed only when your chosen game and setup call for them.
- For internet play, verify the subscription rule: Nintendo Switch Online is required by many online games, but not every one. Check the game’s product information rather than assuming.
When Nintendo Switch Online is needed
Nintendo says many first- and third-party games require membership for online co-op or competitive features, while a small number of online titles allow play without it; Fortnite is one example Nintendo names. The requirement is about the game’s online features. Playing together locally does not automatically trigger it, although the game can still impose its own system, copy, mode, and accessory requirements. Nintendo’s Switch FAQ also cautions that specific features vary by game.
