The game calls this lot type a Residential Rental. It is separate from the prebuilt apartments in City Living and Eco Lifestyle.
What kind of apartment can you make?
For Rent lets you design a multi-unit dwelling and assign different rooms to separate rental units or shared areas. EA describes it as a customizable multi-unit lot for multiple Sim families (EA’s announcement, November 2, 2023).

This is not a way to redesign the fixed apartment system from City Living or Eco Lifestyle. EA treats those apartments as separate from Residential Rentals; City Living penthouse lots are not compatible with the Residential Rental lot type (EA’s For Rent FAQ).

How to build a Residential Rental
- Open the lot in Build Mode. Choose an eligible lot in a livable world.
- Change its lot type to Residential Rental. EA also documents creating a Residential Rental through the phone or Owned Businesses panel. Follow the current in-game labels if they differ from the wording here.
- Build the layout. Create the rooms for each unit along with any common areas, such as a lobby or courtyard.
- Assign rooms. Select a room and use its assignment dropdown to add it to an existing unit, create a new unit, or mark it as shared space. Assign at least one room to the first unit before creating additional units.
- Configure the units. Open the Venue Info or Unit Configuration panel to name units, review their size and value, set bedroom and bathroom counts, choose a home unit, and manage unit traits or challenges.
- Set up tenants. Set the tenant agreement, then choose a household to move into each unit.
EA’s Residential Rentals support guide documents the lot-type, room-assignment, and unit-configuration workflow.

How many units and Sims can one lot hold?
The official Xbox/Microsoft Store listing for For Rent, retrieved October 8, 2026, advertises up to six units per lot and up to eight Sims in each unit (Xbox listing). Treat these as the published limits, not a guarantee that every layout will play smoothly. The listing mentions cheats for exceeding the unit count, but relying on cheats is not necessary for a standard build.

- A lot that can use the Residential Rental type; City Living penthouses are excluded.
EA announced For Rent for December 7, 2023. The expansion’s availability and price can vary by platform and storefront.
