The best Pokémon for a Pokémon Platinum playthrough are the ones that contribute for much of the story, cover battles your starter handles poorly, and perform well without demanding scarce moves or other resources. There is no single best team for every player: the right choices depend on your starter, preferred play style, and whether you want to use late-game or legendary Pokémon.
What makes a Pokémon one of the best in Platinum?
For a main-story team, judge a Pokémon by practical value rather than competitive rankings or popularity. Smogon’s Pokémon Platinum In-Game Tiers guide emphasizes early availability, efficient knockouts, taking little damage, useful natural moves, a helpful ability, and not relying on excessive TMs. Those qualities matter because an early catch can help through more of the game, while a Pokémon that needs several limited resources may weaken the rest of the party.
- Availability: How soon can it join, and how much of the story can it support?
- Coverage: Does it add useful offensive types and help against bosses your existing team may struggle with?
- Reliability: Does it combine useful speed, durability, ability, or naturally learned moves?
- Cost: Does it need a particular evolution method, a trade, or competitive access to a limited TM?
- Team fit: Does it add a needed role, or duplicate what another party member already does?
Build around your starter, not a fixed “best team”
Your starter is the natural first piece of the party, but it changes what the rest of the team should provide. Choose later members to add complementary types, different strengths, and practical utility rather than collecting several Pokémon that fill the same role. A strong party usually benefits from a mix of offensive coverage, speed or durability, and any field-move utility you want to carry.
Think of a “best team for Pokémon Platinum” as a set of roles, not a mandatory list of six species. If your starter already covers a type or battle role well, prioritize a different one; if it leaves a gap, seek a teammate that addresses it. Also decide whether you are willing to trade or wait for a late-game addition before choosing candidates.

Why Platinum gives you more team options
Platinum’s Sinnoh Pokédex has 210 entries. Bulbapedia says 59 Pokémon were added to the Sinnoh roster, bringing it to that total. Serebii describes the change differently, saying that 60 more Pokémon are immediately available in the Sinnoh Dex than in Diamond and Pearl; those are the source’s respective descriptions, not figures to combine into one count. See Bulbapedia’s Pokémon Platinum Version entry and Serebii’s Platinum overview.
The expanded roster makes team building more flexible, but it does not establish one universally optimal lineup. Consider when a Pokémon becomes available and what your party needs at that point, not just its eventual strength. A Pokémon that arrives late can still be useful, but it contributes to fewer story battles than an equally capable early catch.

Choose candidates by the job your team needs done
When comparing individual Pokémon, check Platinum-specific availability, evolution requirements, and move access before committing. The broad roster and tier guidance support a practical selection method, but they do not establish exact route locations, encounter levels, or best movesets for individual species. Avoid treating a familiar name as an automatic recommendation without checking those details.
- Need broader type coverage? Favor a candidate that adds attacks and matchups your starter and current party lack.
- Need a reliable battler? Look for a combination of useful natural moves, workable speed or bulk, and an ability that contributes during the story.
- Need to conserve resources? Prefer candidates that function well with level-up moves instead of competing for several limited TMs.
- Want to avoid trading or waiting? Rule out options whose evolution or availability depends on those conditions.
- Need field utility? Consider whether a teammate can provide a field move you want without creating too much role overlap.
Keep the goal to the main story
A Pokémon that excels in competitive play or the postgame Battle Frontier is not automatically the best choice for the main game. For a story run, availability, dependable performance, useful natural moves, and fit with the rest of your party matter more than a ranking built for a different format. Likewise, a favorite Pokémon can be a good choice if you enjoy using it; “best” here means practical contribution, not a rule against personal preference.
