Yes. You can play many ordinary PC games in a VR headset by showing the PC desktop on a virtual screen. The game still appears as a flat, conventional game—not an immersive VR experience—unless the game itself supports VR or you use a compatible conversion method.
What does “playing normal games in VR” mean?
Usually, it means viewing a conventional PC game on a large virtual monitor inside the headset. Bigscreen, for example, can show a PC desktop on a customizable virtual screen and describes using it to play PC games on a big screen. The headset acts as a display; the game remains in its ordinary flat-screen format. Bigscreen’s desktop page and its Steam listing describe this kind of use.
That is different from playing a game in native VR, where the game renders a stereoscopic view and responds to head movement and VR controls. Simply putting a flat game on a virtual screen does not add those features. Valve’s Steamworks launch-options documentation distinguishes VR and non-VR desktop launch modes; VR support depends on the game.
Ways to play PC games on a virtual screen
Bigscreen Remote Desktop on Quest
Bigscreen’s Quest Remote Desktop route streams a Windows PC desktop to the Bigscreen app in the headset. Its setup instructions call for the Windows Remote Desktop client, the same account in the PC client and Quest app, a shared local network, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi on Quest. Bigscreen on Steam
Bigscreen is also listed on Steam for PC VR. The listing describes using a desktop in virtual reality and playing PC games on large screens. Its stated minimum PC VR requirements include Windows 10, an Intel i5-4590, 8 GB of RAM, and an NVIDIA GTX 970 or AMD 290 equivalent or better. Check the listing for current requirements before installing.
Virtual Desktop
Virtual Desktop supports several standalone headset families, including Meta Quest, Pico, HTC Vive Focus, Play for Dream MR, and Samsung Galaxy XR, according to its official site. Its requirements call for the computer to connect by Ethernet to a 5 GHz AC or AX Wi-Fi router. Streaming PCVR games requires a VR-ready Windows 10 or 11 PC, and the vendor cautions that not all games are compatible. Consult the current Virtual Desktop requirements and FAQ for the exact setup.

How to choose a setup
- Confirm headset and operating-system support. Bigscreen’s Remote Desktop instructions cover Quest and Windows; Virtual Desktop publishes a broader list of supported standalone headsets. Check the software’s current compatibility information for your exact devices.
- Separate desktop streaming from PCVR streaming. Displaying a desktop is not the same task as streaming a native PC VR game. Virtual Desktop specifies a VR-ready Windows PC for PCVR game streaming; Bigscreen specifies hardware encoding for its Quest desktop-streaming route.
- Check the network requirements. Bigscreen’s Quest instructions call for both devices on the same local network and 5 GHz Wi-Fi on the headset. Virtual Desktop calls for a wired computer-to-router connection and a 5 GHz AC or AX router.
- Decide whether a virtual screen is enough. If you want a large display for a game that has no VR mode, virtual-screen play may suit you. For immersive head-tracked play, check the game’s own VR support and launch settings.
These requirements describe vendor-published configurations, not a guarantee of a particular latency, image quality, frame rate, or compatibility with every game.

- Bigscreen on Quest: Verify the Windows client and Quest app use the same account, both devices are on the same local network, Quest is using 5 GHz Wi-Fi, Windows marks the network as private, and the PC has a supported hardware encoder.
- Virtual Desktop: Check that the headset and computer are on the same network, the computer is wired to the router, and firewall or VPN settings are not blocking the connection.
These checks can help identify common configuration problems, but they are not guaranteed fixes for every setup.
