Yes: Activision has announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for October 23, 2026. The change it announced in 2025 is narrower than ending annual releases: Activision said it would stop releasing Modern Warfare or Black Ops games back-to-back, while still aiming to deliver a distinct experience each year.
Is there a Call of Duty game coming out in 2026?
Yes. Activision announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 on May 28, 2026, with a worldwide launch date of October 23, 2026. That date is still upcoming as of October 8, 2026, so it is a scheduled release, not a confirmation that the game has already launched. Activision’s announcement names Infinity Ward as the lead studio.
The announced platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. Activision lists physical editions for PS5 and Xbox Series X through select retailers; edition and format availability may differ by platform and retailer. Its editions and launch information also lists October 23 as the worldwide date.
What recent Call of Duty tradition is changing?
On December 9, 2025, the Call of Duty team said: “We will no longer do back-to-back releases of Modern Warfare or Black Ops games.” The statement, published under “Call of Duty Staff,” describes a change to consecutive releases within those two subseries—not a decision to stop releasing Call of Duty every year.

The same update says the main aim is “to ensure we provide an absolutely unique experience each and every year.” It also promises to “drive innovation that is meaningful, not incremental.” Those are Activision’s stated goals; they do not establish how successful the strategy will be.
Did Activision stop annual Call of Duty releases?
No such end was announced in the December 2025 update. Its language explicitly continued to describe a unique experience each year, and the announced Modern Warfare 4 release gives the franchise a scheduled 2026 entry. These points support continued annual intent, but they do not guarantee a release in every future year: Activision has not specified the exact cadence beyond announced titles.

| Interpretation | What Activision’s statements establish |
|---|---|
| Annual franchise releases | The 2025 update refers to an experience “each and every year,” and Modern Warfare 4 is announced for 2026. This indicates stated intent, not a guarantee for unannounced years. |
| Back-to-back releases in one subseries | Activision said it would no longer release Modern Warfare or Black Ops games consecutively. |
Did Microsoft’s Activision shift change the 2026 release?
Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 organizational update describes Activision taking on World’s Edge and Rare, and says the next Halo title will be developed by a separate, purpose-built team. The post does not say those organizational changes altered Modern Warfare 4 or caused its schedule. It therefore does not support attributing the Call of Duty release plan to that shift. Microsoft’s update is about the organizational changes, not a new Call of Duty cadence announcement.
