For a first Honour Mode run, the safest picks here are the Open Hand Monk/Thief, Swords Bard/Fighter and Devotion Paladin/Sorcerer: they pair dependable damage with useful control or defensive tools. The ranking below weighs survival, how reliably a build contributes, its gear and consumable dependence, and how demanding its level progression is—not a measured win rate. All ten are candidates from PC Gamer’s Patch 8 build guide, updated 3 September 2026; this is a reasoned comparison, not a claim that these builds were tested against one another.
What Honour Mode demands from a build
Honour Mode is not simply a higher-damage version of the campaign. Larian described it at launch as tougher than Tactician, with more than 30 changes to boss fights and a new Legendary Action system intended to catch players off guard. That figure is Larian’s launch count, not a tally of every later change. The mode also prevents loading an earlier save to undo a bad encounter. If a run fails, you can continue the adventure outside Honour Mode, but that does not preserve the Honour ruleset or qualify the run for its Golden D20 reward.
Patch 7’s official notes illustrate why a build needs more than a strong damage turn: bosses such as the Bulette and Malus Thorm gained specific Legendary Actions. Initiative, positioning, a way to escape danger, and dependable control can matter as much as a peak-damage combo.
Honour Mode also changes familiar action-economy interactions. The community-maintained Patch 5 notes document restrictions including Haste and Bloodlust extra actions not granting the usual Extra Attack benefit, Pact of the Blade not stacking with Extra Attack, and many damage-rider combinations behaving differently from other modes. Those notes are secondary documentation, so don’t choose a build on the assumption that an old exploit-heavy combo still works.

How the ten builds rank
The ranking favors a forgiving first Honour run over a theoretical damage ceiling. It is an editorial assessment of the documented setups, not an official tier list, win-rate comparison, or controlled test. The role labels are shorthand; the main trade-offs are explained below.
| Rank | Build and final split | Primary role |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Open Hand Monk 9 / Thief Rogue 3 | Bonus-action melee damage |
| 2 | College of Swords Bard 10 / Fighter 2 | Ranged damage and control |
| 3 | Devotion Paladin 6 / Sorcerer 6 | Durable melee and burst |
| 4 | Death Cleric 10 / Circle of Stars Druid 2 | Close-range area control |
| 5 | Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 | Stealth opening damage |
| 6 | Berserker Barbarian 5 / Thief Rogue 4 / Champion Fighter 3 | Rage-fueled throwing |
| 7 | Arcane Archer 11 / War Cleric 1 | Ranged attacks with disabling arrows |
| 8 | Giant Barbarian 10 / Fighter 2 | Elemental throwing and battlefield disruption |
| 9 | Swashbuckler 7 / Hexblade 5 | Charisma-based melee |
| 10 | Oathbreaker Paladin 8 / Hexblade 1 / Thief 3 | Smite-focused melee |
1. Open Hand Monk 9 / Thief Rogue 3 — Master Martial Artist
This is the strongest all-around first-run recommendation in the group. Open Hand features and Flurry of Blows give it a consistent melee routine, while Thief’s extra bonus action supports more of the build’s core attacks. Tavern Brawler is central to the guide’s setup. Its biggest practical catch is ability-score support: if you dump Strength, the build depends on Strength elixirs to deliver the intended performance. Plan that supply rather than treating the elixirs as optional.
2. College of Swords Bard 10 / Fighter 2 — Gunslinger Bard
Ranged Slashing Flourish supplies repeatable offense, and Fighter’s Archery fighting style and Action Surge complement it. Bard skills and control spells make the character useful when attacking is not the safest answer. The guide’s equipment direction changes over the campaign: it starts around hand crossbows and later recommends The Dead Shot and Band of the Mystic Scoundrel. Treat those as progression targets, not prerequisites for the build to function from the start.
3. Devotion Paladin 6 / Sorcerer 6 — Sorcadin
Paladin defenses and Extra Attack give this character a sturdier foundation than a pure burst caster, while Sorcerer spell slots can fuel Divine Smites. That combination makes it a flexible answer to dangerous priority targets. The practical management burden is the Devotion oath: the PC Gamer author recounts breaking it during an Honour run, so be deliberate about choices that may violate your oath rather than assuming the subclass is consequence-free.

This is an up-close area-control caster built around Spirit Guardians. Starry Form: Dragon helps support concentration, while the guide pairs the setup with radiant-damage and reverberation equipment. The role is valuable when enemies crowd the party, but its performance leans more heavily on its equipment and on keeping its key spell active than the top three picks do.

5. Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7
Gloom Stalker initiative and Assassin’s opening-round advantages reward starting fights on your terms. It can be a potent stealth ambusher, but not every encounter allows a clean stealth approach: dialogue-led and forced engagements can limit that advantage. Choose it if you enjoy scouting and initiating carefully, not if you want every fight to begin with the same reliable setup.
6. Berserker Barbarian 5 / Thief Rogue 4 / Champion Fighter 3 — Olympic Shotputter
Rage-powered throws pair with Thief’s additional bonus action, and the guide names returning weapons such as Returning Pike and Nyrulna as useful options. Its appeal is a distinct, aggressive ranged routine from a martial character. Be cautious with older claims about throw-build damage: Honour Mode’s altered damage-rider behavior means familiar exploit-based calculations may not carry over.
7. Arcane Archer 11 / War Cleric 1
This longbow build uses Arcane Archer arrows to damage or disable enemies at range, with a War Cleric bonus-action attack as an additional tool. Its distance can help keep the character out of immediate danger, but the arrow saving throws make Intelligence investment a meaningful build decision. That competes with other attributes rather than arriving as a free bonus.
8. Giant Barbarian 10 / Fighter 2 — Rainbow Thrower
Elemental Cleaver and Mighty Impel underpin the guide’s throwing and environmental-play concept, while Fighter contributes Action Surge. This is the most version-sensitive recommendation: it is specifically a Patch 8 build, so confirm that the relevant subclass and mechanics are available in your game version before planning around it. The cited material does not establish how later patches may have changed its interactions.
9. Swashbuckler 7 / Hexblade 5 — Hexbuckler
The guide emphasizes consistent Sneak Attack and a route that does not depend on Extra Attack, with stronger damage coming later. Its bonus actions are valuable to the build, so casual dual-wielding can compete with the actions it wants to spend elsewhere. It suits players who want a Charisma-oriented melee character and are comfortable managing that action economy.
Rank #3
- Experience the pivotal game of the Persona series faithfully remade with cutting-edge graphics, modernized quality-of-life features, and signature stylish UI.
- Fully immerse yourself in an emotional, gripping journey with new scenes and character interactions, additional voiceover, and a reloaded soundtrack.
- Choose how to meaningfully spend each day through various activities from exploring the Port Island to forging genuine bonds with beloved characters.
- Build and command your optimal team to take down otherworldly Shadows and climb closer to the truth.
10. Oathbreaker Paladin 8 / Hexblade 1 / Thief 3 — Paladin Batman
This smite-oriented melee setup combines Charisma-based damage with Thief bonus actions. It has more moving parts and its recommendations include story choices with moral consequences; those choices should not be treated as neutral equipment upgrades. The concept can appeal to players committed to an Oathbreaker run, but it is a less uncomplicated first Honour recommendation than the higher-ranked options.

Use each split above as the build’s destination, not as an instruction to multiclass at level 1. Class features, feats and Extra Attack depend on levels in the relevant class, and multiclassing early can postpone important power spikes. Before taking a level in a second class, check what the next level in your current class would unlock and whether delaying it leaves the character short of a core feature.

Some items can be missed if a story choice changes access or a vendor does not survive. The guide’s named targets include the Ring of Protection, Returning Pike, The Dead Shot, Band of the Mystic Scoundrel and Amulet of Greater Health; do not make a whole run depend on a particular piece unless you know how you will obtain it. For builds whose plan explicitly leans on an item or consumable—such as Strength elixirs for the Monk when Strength is dumped—decide on a fallback before you need it.
Which build should you choose?
- For a first Honour run: choose Open Hand Monk/Thief for direct, repeatable offense, Swords Bard/Fighter for ranged damage plus control, or Devotion Paladin/Sorcerer for a durable melee character with burst.
- For controlled openings: choose Gloom Stalker/Assassin if you can scout and initiate from stealth, or Swords Bard/Fighter if you want ranged pressure without depending on an ambush.
- For a distinctive throwing playstyle: compare the Berserker/Thief/Champion and Patch 8 Giant Barbarian/Fighter options, while accounting for returning-weapon access and version-specific mechanics.
- For a caster who can hold a dangerous area: consider Death Cleric/Stars Druid, accepting its greater reliance on concentration and equipment.
Other options in the Patch 8 guide include Hexblade Warlock 12, Bladesinger Wizard 10 / Ancients Paladin 2, and Swashbuckling Duelist Bardadin. They are alternatives for players seeking different spellblade or caster styles, rather than entries in this ten-build comparison.
Practice the danger before risking a run
Larian later added Custom Mode as a way to use Honour Mode mechanics without treating the campaign as a Golden D20 attempt. It is useful for learning how a party handles Legendary Actions, positioning mistakes and control failures before committing to a no-death run. Larian’s Community Update #25 introduced the mode’s design; the official Patch 7 notes show examples of boss-specific changes. PC Gamer’s Patch 8 guide, updated 3 September 2026, supplies the ten named builds and equipment directions used here, but it is a build guide rather than an official balance reference. The available material does not establish comparative completion rates or damage benchmarks, and it does not confirm whether patches after that guide changed every interaction described.
