The early Patch 7 milestone was more than 15 million mod downloads, not one million. In Community Update #29, Larian Studios said that less than a month after Patch 7 arrived on PC, players had uploaded over 1,000 mods and recorded more than 15 million downloads. Downloads count how often mods were downloaded; they do not represent the number of distinct mods.
What did Larian report after Patch 7?
Larian’s Community Update #29 reported over 1,000 uploaded mods and more than 15 million downloads in less than a month after Patch 7 launched on PC in 2024. The two numbers measure different things: uploaded mods are creations, while downloads are activity across those creations.

That distinction matters when describing the milestone. It was not one million unique mods. A popular mod can be downloaded many times, so a download total can greatly exceed the count of individual mods.
What changed with Patch 7’s mod support?
Patch 7 brought an in-game Mod Manager for browsing and installing supported mods, alongside the Baldur’s Gate 3 Toolkit, a separate, free application on Steam for PC mod creation. Larian said mods created and uploaded through the Toolkit could then be browsed and installed in-game. The studio’s Patch 7 announcement describes the Toolkit and its role.

Larian’s supported mod pipeline uses mod.io and is intended to improve compatibility and availability across platforms. Third-party modding remains possible, but Larian’s official support applies to mods in its supported pipeline. Game updates or conflicts between third-party mods can cause stability issues; installing mods through the official manager does not make every combination conflict-free. See Larian’s mod support FAQ for the studio’s support context.
How does the early milestone compare with later totals?
The early post-Patch 7 figure should not be conflated with cumulative totals reported years later. GamesRadar reported in August 2026 that Larian’s three-year figures were 500 million mod downloads and 13,000 unique mods across platforms. That is later secondary reporting of Larian’s post, rather than a directly verified primary statement in the cited material.
| Milestone | Downloads | Mods | Scope and attribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Less than a month after Patch 7 | More than 15 million | Over 1,000 uploaded | PC; Larian Studios, Community Update #29, 2024 |
| Three-year milestone | 500 million | 13,000 unique | Across platforms; reported by GamesRadar in August 2026 as figures from Larian’s post |
The figures cover different time spans and platform scopes, and the later report explicitly distinguishes downloads from unique mods. They show growth in both use and the catalog, but they are not like-for-like measurements.

Playing with mods in multiplayer
Larian says multiplayer players must have the exact same mods installed and use the same versions. Its official mod support FAQ states this requirement. If a session will not connect, check the mod list and version on every player’s installation.

Console mod limits
Larian introduced a 100-mod limit on console after players reported slow loading and crashes with more than 100 mods enabled. The limit is platform-specific; consult Larian’s current support information for the applicable rules rather than assuming the console restriction applies to PC.
Making mods with the Toolkit
The Toolkit is for PC and is separate from the in-game manager. Larian lists 160 GB of required space and recommends Windows 10 64-bit, 32 GB of RAM, and specified CPU and GPU classes. These are Toolkit requirements and recommendations, not general system requirements for playing Baldur’s Gate 3.
