In Act One, you can find the missing shipment at a gnoll-attacked cave on the Risen Road. If you want the Zhentarim reward path—Brem’s special stock and the weapon Harold—keep the Caravan Strongbox unopened and return it to Zarys at the Zhentarim Hideout. Opening it reveals the Iron Flask but starts a dangerous encounter and gives up that unopened-return route.
How to start Find the Missing Shipment
This Act One quest has several entry points. You can encounter Rugan and Olly at the cave on the Risen Road, speak with Zarys in the Zhentarim Hideout beneath Waukeen’s Rest, or read the Shipment Orders carried by a dead caravan agent. Your journal objectives can differ depending on how you reached the quest and what has already happened. The quest overview
Reach the cave before taking a long rest
Rugan and Olly are trapped inside a cave on the Risen Road while gnolls attack. The Caravan Strongbox is in the cave. If you approach the cave and then take a long rest before resolving the situation, the gnolls can kill both agents. If you want to preserve the possibility of dealing with them directly, handle the encounter before resting. Risen Road location and encounter details
You can also find Shipment Orders on a dead agent along the Risen Road. Reading them can advance the quest without starting it through Zarys or the cave encounter.

Choose what to do with the Caravan Strongbox
Make this decision before opening the box: the Iron Flask is inside, but opening the strongbox starts a difficult encounter. Returning it unopened to Zarys is the route tied to favor with the Zhentarim and access to Brem’s special stock, including Harold. Opening it means you give up that unopened-return reward path. Caravan Strongbox contents and consequences
| Choice | What it can offer | Cost or risk |
|---|---|---|
| Return the box unopened to Zarys | Zhentarim favor, Brem’s special stock, and the Harold reward path | You do not open the box to obtain the Iron Flask immediately. |
| Open the strongbox | Reveals the Iron Flask | Triggers a dangerous encounter and forfeits the unopened-return reward path. |
| Let Rugan retain the shipment | Can preserve the agents’ delivery route if the relevant quest state allows it; Rugan may go to the hideout with Olly if Olly survived. | Zarys’s response and the agents’ later outcomes depend on earlier choices. |
| Take the box from Rugan | Puts the item under your party’s control. | Can put Rugan in danger, including punishment or death; it is not a consequence-free way to claim the shipment. |
The exact dialogue and later outcomes vary with the route you took and how you handled Rugan. The quest’s branches do not guarantee the same fate for both agents or the same response from Zarys. Rugan’s quest outcomes

What the Shipment Orders say
The note is attributed to Nine-Fingers Keene, not spoken by a living character. It begins, “Deliver the chest to me unopened.” It warns that opening it will mean death. That order names Keene as the intended recipient; the immediate Act One reward route discussed here is the handoff to Zarys at the Zhentarim Hideout. Shipment Orders transcription
