The Asus G73JH was a fast, well-cooled 17.3-inch gaming notebook for its 2010 era, built around the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870. Its original strengths came with trade-offs: a reflective, low-contrast screen, substantial bulk and roughly an hour of battery life under load. This is a legacy-machine review, not a recommendation for modern games. The exact configuration matters: Notebookcheck tested the G73JH-TY042V with a Core i5-520M, 4 GB of memory, two 320 GB drives, a 1600×900 display and the Mobility Radeon HD 5870.
How well did the Asus G73JH run games?
For a gaming laptop of its time, the G73JH delivered strong performance. Notebookcheck’s March 26, 2010 review tested one configuration and reported these results:
| Game and test settings | Result |
|---|---|
| FEAR 2, high settings, 4x AA | 76.0 fps |
| Modern Warfare 2, high settings, 4x AA | 55.4 fps |
| Bad Company 2, high settings, 4x AA and 8x AF | 37.3 fps |
| Crysis, high settings | 34.0 fps |
| DiRT 2, very high settings, 4x AA | 31.0 fps |
These are period results from one machine and the review’s software and test methods; they do not predict performance in current games. AnandTech’s April 17, 2010 review likewise treated the Mobility Radeon HD 5870 as a strong laptop GPU for its era, while noting that demanding games and effects could reduce frame rates substantially. The mobile HD 5870 should not be treated as equivalent to a desktop GPU with the same model number. Notebookcheck’s G73JH review and AnandTech’s review provide the original context.
What are the G73JH’s specifications?
There was no single configuration for every G73JH. CPU, memory, storage and display resolution varied between regional and retail models. The Notebookcheck G73JH-TY042V sample had:

- 17.3-inch, glossy 1600×900 display
- Intel Core i5-520M processor
- ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 graphics
- 4 GB of memory
- Two 320 GB drives
An ASUS ROG-hosted owner review reported that many configurations had a 1920×1080 panel, while some Best Buy models used 1600×900. Treat that as an account of the models the author encountered, not a guarantee for every market or unit. Check the exact model suffix and the screen’s native resolution before buying; the chassis name alone does not identify the panel. The ASUS ROG owner review describes that distinction.
How good is the display?
The reviewed 1600×900 screen was bright but weak in contrast and difficult to use in reflective surroundings. Notebookcheck measured 230.1 cd/m² average brightness, 241 cd/m² maximum brightness, 91% brightness distribution, 190:1 contrast and a 1.27 cd/m² black level. Its reviewer criticized the high black level, reflective glossy finish and limited vertical viewing angles.

Those measurements apply to the review sample, not every G73JH panel. A 1920×1080 variant has a different native resolution, but that fact alone does not establish better contrast, viewing angles or surface treatment. Inspect the specific display for reflections, uneven illumination and viewing-angle changes.
Did the G73JH overheat or run loudly?
Original reviews identified cooling as a strength. Notebookcheck praised the cooling and low noise, assigning its sample 92% for temperature and 86% for noise in its review rubric. The ASUS ROG owner review describes separate CPU and GPU fans and heat sinks, with heat exhausted at the back; its temperature observations are the author’s own, not controlled measurements.

Those historical impressions cannot establish how a surviving laptop behaves now. Dust, blocked vents, worn fans, dried thermal interface material or earlier repairs can affect temperature and noise. ASUS’s general overheating guidance says debris obstructing vents or fans can impair cooling; it is not specific to the G73JH. ASUS overheating guidance
How long does the battery last, and what power adapter does it use?
Notebookcheck’s test unit had a 75 Wh lithium-ion battery. In its 2010 tests, runtime was 2 hours 39 minutes at idle with minimum brightness, 1 hour 58 minutes in Wi-Fi browsing, 1 hour 36 minutes during DVD playback and 1 hour 11 minutes under load. These results show the original system was not especially mobile under demanding use. They do not indicate the capacity of an original battery today.

Adapter wattage is not uniform across the accounts: Notebookcheck reported a 120 W adapter for its test unit, while the ASUS ROG owner review mentioned a 150 W brick on that author’s stock setup. Check the labels on the exact laptop and adapter. Match voltage, polarity, connector and required wattage rather than choosing by model name alone. Notebookcheck also measured 35.8–43.2 W idle draw, 84.4 W under load and 127.4 W in a combined high-load, Twin Turbo and charging condition on its test configuration.

Notebookcheck praised the sample’s workmanship, matte surfaces, backlit keyboard, large touchpad and sound. It found the keyboard spongy and the touchpad’s combined button long. Its 2010 rubric awarded the laptop 88% overall, including 91% for game performance, 92% for temperature, 86% for noise, 68% for display and 58% for weight. The 17.3-inch format and low weight score reflect the practical trade-off: this was a large machine built for gaming performance, not easy travel. Inspect hinges, keyboard, touchpad and ports on any used example, since a historical build assessment says nothing about wear on an individual unit.
What should you check before buying a used G73JH?
Assess the exact machine rather than relying on the family name or a historical review score. A practical inspection includes:
- Confirm the full model suffix, processor, installed GPU, memory, storage and native screen resolution.
- Check the panel for reflections, viewing-angle limitations, dead pixels and uneven brightness.
- Boot the machine and test stability; look for graphics artifacts during a game or other sustained graphics workload.
- Listen for fan grinding or rattling, check that vents are unobstructed and watch for unexpected shutdowns or unstable operation under load.
- Inspect hinges, ports, keyboard, touchpad and chassis for damage or signs of repair.
- Check battery condition separately; the original runtime figures do not predict present capacity.
- Match the power adapter to the laptop’s own voltage, polarity, connector and wattage labels.
- Verify operating-system, driver and application compatibility for the software you intend to use; the 2010 reviews do not establish current compatibility.
