First identify which kind of “lag” you’re seeing: are actions delayed or characters snapping back for several players, or is the picture choppy on just one PC? The first points to latency, the host, or synchronization; the second is more likely a local frame-rate problem. Work through the checks below in order, changing one thing at a time. A graphics adjustment or better cable on your PC cannot fix a distant host or a server-side problem.
1. Tell network lag from low FPS
Delayed actions, doors responding late, or characters appearing to snap back are signs to investigate the connection, host, or multiplayer synchronization—especially if several players notice the same behavior. If only your screen is choppy while other players seem unaffected, start with local performance instead.
These symptoms can overlap, so use who is affected and what you see as clues rather than a diagnosis. Steam Support separates latency troubleshooting from FPS and performance troubleshooting, and Barotrauma developer notes document past multiplayer synchronization and rubberbanding bugs. Those historical fixes do not establish that the same defects are present in the current build. 2. Compare server latency and distance
Use the in-game server browser’s latency information as a starting point, then try a geographically closer host or server if one is available. Steam Support notes that higher latency increases the likelihood of lag. There is no universal ping cutoff established here that guarantees a smooth Barotrauma session; compare routes and symptoms instead of treating one number as a pass/fail test.

- Blazing-fast WiFi 7 boosts tri-band throughput up to 12000 Mbps with 320 MHz channels of 6 GHz band, Multi-Link Operation (MLO) and 4K-QAM
- Powerful wired network capacity of up to 20G with one 2.5G WAN port and seven 2.5G LAN ports.
- High-performance quad-core 2.0GHz CPU with robust cooling, 2GB RAM and eight internal antennas providing up to 3000 sq. ft. of range.
- Smart Home Master makes it easy to set up functional subnetwork (up to 3 SSIDs) for IoT devices and VPNs
- ROG-exclusive Gaming Network streamlines Triple-Level Game Acceleration setup and connections through convenient SSIDs
If players on different connections all experience delays in the same session, that makes the host or server worth checking too. Neither client-hosted nor dedicated hosting is automatically faster; the machine, network, location, and conditions matter. Steam latency guidance
3. Try Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi or powerline
If you currently connect over Wi-Fi or a powerline adapter, connect the PC directly to the router with Ethernet and repeat the same session or test. A wired comparison can help isolate intermittent wireless or powerline problems; it will not shorten the route to a distant host or resolve server load. Steam connection troubleshooting

Ethernet is a diagnostic option only if you can run a cable to the router. The cited guidance supports testing a wired connection, not any particular cable category or model.
4. Pause competing bandwidth use
For a controlled test, pause downloads and close or pause bandwidth-heavy applications on your network, then see whether the same session improves. Steam Support notes that background applications can contribute to choppy gameplay and lag symptoms. Avoid indiscriminately ending processes or installing “game optimizer” utilities; neither is established as a fix by the cited guidance. Steam network troubleshooting

5. Check firewall and server setup if you host
If you are joining someone else’s session, do not change dedicated-server port settings on your PC as a general lag fix. Hosting method matters: Barotrauma client-hosted multiplayer uses Steam P2P, whereas a dedicated server has its own network configuration.
Client-hosted session
For connectivity trouble, check whether firewall settings are interfering, following Steam’s troubleshooting guidance. Client-hosted multiplayer uses Steam P2P, so dedicated-server port forwarding instructions do not apply to every host. Steam: Firewall troubleshooting · Barotrauma hosting guide

Dedicated server
Consult the server’s actual serversettings.xml and forward its configured ports over UDP. The official hosting guide gives UDP 27015 and 27016 as defaults, not universal values for every installation; use the ports configured for your server. Barotrauma dedicated-server hosting guide
6. Don’t raise tick rate as a catch-all fix
The official Barotrauma wiki lists TickRate as 20 by default and cautions against going above the default because networking may already struggle, especially when a scene contains many objects. It also notes that lowering the value may affect mods. The wiki warns that its server-settings information may be outdated or incomplete, so check current documentation before changing this setting; do not treat tick-rate increases as a generic way to reduce multiplayer lag. 7. Update the game and test without mods
Make sure the game is current, then temporarily disable mods and repeat the session if freezes or lag spikes began after adding or updating one. Developer notes document multiplayer freezes and lag spikes associated with scripted events in situations involving many mods with custom events; they also record networking fixes. That history makes a mod-free test useful, not proof that mods generally cause lag or that a documented bug still exists in the current version. Barotrauma developer updates
8. Adjust graphics only for one-PC frame-rate trouble
If only your PC’s image is choppy, compare its hardware with the current Steam store requirements and reduce graphics load or close unnecessary applications as a local performance test. The store listing, accessed in 2026, gives Windows minimums of a dual-core 2.4 GHz processor and 4 GB RAM; its recommended specifications are a quad-core 3.0 GHz processor and 8 GB RAM. These specifications can change, and meeting them alone does not guarantee high FPS. Check the live listing for current requirements. Barotrauma on Steam · Steam FPS and performance troubleshooting
Quick Recap
How to read the results
- Several players report delayed actions or snapping: prioritize server latency, host conditions, and synchronization checks.
- Only one PC looks choppy: prioritize local FPS checks; a network change may not address that symptom.
- A wired test helps: the wireless or powerline route may be contributing, but the test does not prove the host or server is problem-free.
- Only a dedicated server is affected: check that server’s configured UDP ports and settings rather than applying dedicated-server forwarding advice to all session types.
