Baldur’s Gate 3: Which Boss Fights Are the Hardest?

Raphael is a leading pick for Baldur’s Gate 3’s hardest boss in a standard playthrough, but Honour Mode, Gortash’s fight setup, party builds, and patches can change the ranking.

Raphael is a strong pick for the hardest major boss fight in a standard Baldur’s Gate 3 playthrough; in Honour Mode, the answer is less clear because Legendary Actions and other boss changes can sharply alter encounters. There is no official hardest-boss ranking. This comparison weighs enemy support, lethal mechanics, arena hazards, preparation, and how much a party’s build can change the fight.

Which Baldur’s Gate 3 boss is hardest?

For a general playthrough, Raphael often stands out as the toughest single boss encounter: the party must contend with him, his cambions, and Soul Pillars that affect the fight. Ansur, Cazador, and Orin are also strong candidates, while Gortash’s difficulty depends heavily on when and where you fight him. The House of Grief can be exceptionally difficult, but it is a large encounter rather than a single boss duel.

This order is an editorial comparison, not an objective or official ranking. Baldur’s Gate 3 uses turn-based combat based on the Dungeons & Dragons 5e ruleset, and the game’s difficulty setting, patch version, party composition, and preparation all matter. Larian describes Tactician as a hardcore experience; Honour Mode raises the challenge further. Larian’s November 30, 2023 Community Update says Honour Mode adds “over 30” boss-fight tweaks and a new Legendary Action system.

Hardest fights compared

Encounter Why it can be difficult What changes the challenge
Raphael Raphael, his cambions, and the Soul Pillars create several simultaneous threats. Control effects and managing the cambions can help; destroying pillars has a tradeoff.
Ansur A major late-game encounter and a frequent candidate for the hardest-fight shortlist. Difficulty depends on mode and party; the cited sources do not establish a universal strategy or ranking.
Cazador His encounter’s timing and, if reached, Ascended form can change how dangerous it feels. Patch 4 adjusted the second bat wave timing and made Ascended Cazador’s Legendary Resistance permanent.
Orin Her Unstoppable stacks and Slayer form can make the encounter demanding. Patch 4 raised the maximum Unstoppable stacks from 10 to 12, strengthened Blood Skeletons, and adjusted her Slayer form.
Gortash The coronation encounter can be substantially harder than returning later to fight him in his office. Setup matters: disabling the Steel Watch and choosing the later office fight can change the challenge; the office has traps.
House of Grief Enemy numbers and darkness-related pressure can overwhelm some parties. It is an encounter with many enemies, not a formal boss ranking; party composition and difficulty setting strongly affect it.

Why Raphael is a leading hardest-boss candidate

Raphael’s encounter is demanding because the party has to manage threats beyond the boss himself. His cambions can apply pressure while the Soul Pillars support his spells and can let him regain hit points. Destroying the pillars is not an automatic best move: doing so can expose the party to Raphael’s dangerous ascended form. The right choice depends on the party’s ability to control the fight and withstand that escalation. The encounter details are described in the BG3 Wiki’s Raphael reference, a community-maintained source.

Baldur's Gate 3 - For Playstation 5 (Japan Import) (Multi Language)
  • Online multiplayer for up to four players - allows you to combine your forces in combat, and split your party to follow your own quests and agendas. Concoct the perfect plan together… or introduce an element of chaos when your friends least expect it
  • Origin Character - offer a hand-crafted experience, each with their own unique traits, agenda, and outlook on the world. Their stories intersect with the entire narrative, and your choices will determine whether those stories end in redemption, salvation, domination, or many other outcomes
  • Evolved turn-based combat - based on the D&D 5e ruleset. Team-based initiative, advantage & disadvantage, and roll modifiers join combat cameras, expanded environmental interactions, and a new fluidity in combat that rewards strategy and foresight
  • Define the future of the Forgotten Realms - through your choices, and the roll of the dice. No matter who you play, or what you roll, the world and its inhabitants will react to your story
  • Player-initiated turn-based mode - allows you to pause the world around you at any time even outside of combat. Whether you see an opportunity for a tactical advantage before combat begins, want to pull off a heist with pin-point precision, or need to escape a fiendish trap. Split your party, prepare ambushes, sneak in the darkness -- create your own luck!

Radiant damage against cambions can trigger reflected fire damage, so a damage type that is powerful elsewhere may carry a cost here. Options described in the encounter reference include controlling cambions, using Hope’s Revoke Guest Status to remove them, and disrupting Raphael with control such as Hold Monster. These are alternatives, not mandatory tactics; their usefulness depends on your party and the current game version.

Gortash is two different difficulty questions

“How hard is Gortash?” depends on which encounter you mean. The BG3 Wiki’s Gortash reference describes the coronation fight as significantly harder than returning later to face him in his office, particularly if the Steel Watch has been disabled. In the office, traps add another hazard; the reference describes drawing Gortash and his allies into the foyer to avoid them.

That makes Gortash a poor candidate for a single fixed rank. Quest order, whether the Steel Watch remains active, and the arena can change the fight substantially. These tactical details come from a community-maintained reference and may be affected by patches.

How Honour Mode changes the ranking

Honour Mode is not just a label for a tougher version of the same comparison. Larian’s update says it adds more than 30 boss-fight tweaks and a Legendary Action system. Those changes can alter boss turns and the risks a party must plan around, so a ranking based on a lower difficulty may not carry over. Larian’s Community Update does not name a single hardest boss.

Patch history also matters when comparing remembered encounters. In Patch 4, Larian documented changes to Orin’s Unstoppable maximum, Blood Skeletons, and Slayer form, as well as Cazador’s second bat wave timing and Ascended Cazador’s Legendary Resistance. Patch 7 later listed bug fixes for Cazador, Gortash, Raphael, and Ansur. A tactic or difficulty impression from an older version may not match the current game.

Where Ansur, Cazador, Orin, and the House of Grief fit

Ansur

Ansur belongs on a shortlist of serious late-game challenges, but available references do not support a universal rank or a specific tested strategy. Larian’s patch notes document encounter fixes, and a player-authored Honour Mode guide on Steam has a dedicated Ansur section. That establishes him as a notable candidate, not that every party will find him hardest.

Cazador and Orin

Both are plausible contenders, particularly when playing on a higher difficulty. Their mechanics have changed in patches, so comparisons based on older playthroughs can be misleading. The same Steam Honour Mode guide has sections for both encounters, but it is player-authored coverage rather than a controlled assessment of relative difficulty.

House of Grief

Some players single out the House of Grief because of the number of enemies and darkness-related pressure. That is anecdotal, not a formal ranking or a representative player poll. It is most useful to treat it as a warning that a fight’s difficulty can come from the whole enemy group and battlefield, not just a named boss.

How to decide which fight will be hardest for your party

  • Choose the difficulty context first. A standard playthrough and Honour Mode are different comparisons, especially because Honour Mode adds boss changes and Legendary Actions.
  • Count the threats, not just the boss. Raphael’s cambions and the House of Grief’s enemy numbers can make action economy more important than a boss’s individual abilities.
  • Look for mechanics that punish a specific approach. Raphael’s Soul Pillars create a situational choice, and radiant damage can provoke reflected fire from cambions.
  • Account for encounter setup. Gortash’s coronation and office fights are not equivalent; quest order and the Steel Watch can change the challenge.
  • Expect builds to reorder the list. Control, damage options, and party composition affect how well a group handles enemy support and encounter-specific pressure.
  • Check patch context. Official notes record changes to Cazador, Orin, Raphael, Gortash, and Ansur; an older guide may describe mechanics that have since changed.

Is there an official hardest-boss list?

No official ranking or publisher-attributed boss win rates are established in the cited sources. Player discussions show that people disagree, but they do not provide a representative poll. The most accurate answer is therefore conditional: Raphael is a strong pick for a standard-playthrough hardest boss, while Honour Mode, fight setup, party build, and patch version can move Ansur, Cazador, Orin, or Gortash to the top for a particular run.
