Best Couch Co-Op Games on Xbox Game Pass: What to Check Before You Play

Xbox’s Game Pass catalog has a local co-op filter, but verify each game’s local player count, platform, and plan inclusion on its Store page. Retro Classics is one confirmed 2–4-player example.

If you want to play together on one Xbox, start with a title’s local co-op listing—not just its multiplayer label. The Xbox catalog currently exposes a local co-op filter, but its live results change and cannot be treated as a fixed lineup. One directly verifiable example is Retro Classics, which Xbox lists for local co-op with 2–4 players and includes with Game Pass Essential, Premium, and Ultimate.

What counts as couch co-op?

Couch co-op means people play cooperatively together on the same console or device. The game may use a shared screen or split-screen, depending on its design. Online co-op is different: players cooperate over the internet, and that does not necessarily mean they can play together locally. Xbox’s 2020 examples described split-screen play in Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and Gears 5, and co-op in Halo: The Master Chief Collection either through split-screen or online; that dated article does not confirm those games’ current Game Pass inclusion. Xbox Wire, May 15, 2020.

A verified current example: Retro Classics

Xbox’s Store page lists Retro Classics as a cloud-playable Game Pass title included with Essential, Premium, and Ultimate. Its supported options include PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud Gaming, and handheld, and its capabilities include local co-op for 2–4 players as well as local multiplayer for 2–4. The page shows a Teen rating and lists genres including classics, puzzle and trivia, action and adventure, family and kids, racing and flying, role playing, shooter, strategy, and platformer. These details make it a concrete option to investigate, not a guarantee that its genre mix or rating suits every group. Xbox Store: Retro Classics.

How to find and verify local co-op games

  1. Open Xbox’s Game Pass library. Use the live catalog at Xbox Game Pass games and filter by the subscription and play platform relevant to you. Select the local co-op feature filter to narrow the results.
  2. Open each candidate’s Store page. Confirm that the page specifically lists local co-op. “Multiplayer” alone does not establish that players can share one console.
  3. Check the local player count. A game may support co-op without supporting the number of people in your group locally. Use the Store’s local player figure rather than assuming it matches an online player limit.
  4. Confirm the play arrangement. Look for whether the game uses shared-screen or split-screen play. If the Store page does not make that clear, do not assume one format from the presence of co-op.
  5. Check plan, region, and platform availability. Make sure the title is included for your current Game Pass plan and available on the device you intend to use. Xbox says, “Game titles, number, features, and availability vary over time, by region, XBOX Game Pass plan, and platform.” Xbox Game Pass plan comparison.

Choose for the group, not just the co-op label

After confirming local play, compare the details that affect an actual game night: local player count, shared-screen or split-screen format, supported device, genre, session style, and age rating. For Retro Classics, Xbox’s Store description says it contains “over 50 restored and ready-to-play games”; treat that as the Store’s description rather than an independently verified count. Check the rating and genres against the players joining you.

An extra Xbox Wireless Controller can be useful when more people want to play, but the number of controllers needed depends on the game and setup. Xbox identifies its Xbox Wireless Controller as a way to play Xbox games; check the individual title’s requirements rather than assuming a universal controller count.

Why a fixed “best of Game Pass” list can go stale

Game Pass titles and features change, and availability can differ by region, plan, and platform. The catalog’s filters are useful for finding local co-op candidates, but a search result is not a substitute for checking the individual Store page. Xbox’s announcement of June 16, 2026 named arrivals including Abyssus and 33 Immortals, but the announcement descriptions do not establish local couch co-op for those games. Check their capability pages before treating them as local-play options. Xbox Wire, June 16, 2026.
