Best Character Customization in RPGs: What to Look For

The best RPG character customization depends on what you want to shape: appearance, combat builds, or story identity. Compare those dimensions with two official examples.

There is no single best character creator for every RPG player. Some creators excel at changing a character’s appearance; others offer more ways to shape combat builds or make identity matter in the story. Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard are useful examples of games that combine several of those choices, but the available official information does not support ranking every RPG or naming one universal winner.

What “best character customization” means

When someone asks, “What RPGs have the best character customization in your opinion?”, the answer depends on what they want to customize. A detailed face editor is not necessarily a deep build system, and a wide choice of classes does not guarantee that a character’s identity changes the story.

  • Visual control: How much control you have over appearance, such as face, body, hair, colors, markings, and presets. Check the current in-game creator or an official feature list before relying on specific editor options.
  • Mechanical breadth: How much choice you get over species or race, class, background, skills, abilities, and build direction—and whether those choices can produce meaningfully different ways to play.
  • Narrative integration: Whether your character’s identity, background, or class affects dialogue, story context, events, or how the world responds.
  • Presentation: How often the game shows your custom character during play. This matters to some players, but the official sources here do not establish a consistent comparison across games.

These dimensions are best considered separately. A game can be a strong pick for one and a less compelling fit for another.

Two RPG examples with different strengths to consider

Official feature descriptions make Baldur’s Gate 3 and Dragon Age: The Veilguard relevant examples, but they are not an exhaustive shortlist or a comparative scorecard.

Game Officially described choices What that supports What it does not establish
Baldur’s Gate 3 Larian says a custom character can define race, class, and appearance. Its character-creation update describes background and class as role-play options. The game is based on D&D 5e. Larian character-creation update; Larian gameplay FAQ; Larian general-information FAQ. A useful example if you want mechanical identity and role-play choices to be part of the same character-building decision. It does not establish that every race or background yields the same amount of story content, or that its face editor is the most detailed in RPGs.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard EA describes choosing a race, combat class, and backstory, alongside appearance customization. EA says the created Rook can be carried into the full game on the same platform. EA character creator page. A relevant example if you want to combine character presentation with role and backstory choices. EA’s description is publisher material, not an independent comparative assessment of creator depth.

Which kind of customization should guide your choice?

If appearance is your priority

Compare the actual creator options rather than relying on a game’s general reputation or a promotional phrase such as “robust customization.” Look for the specific controls you care about—such as facial features, hairstyles, colors, markings, or body options—and confirm they are available in the current version. The official descriptions above do not provide a detailed, side-by-side inventory of visual controls, so they cannot settle which game has the more detailed appearance editor.

If you want distinct builds

Focus on how race, class, background, skills, and abilities combine, and whether they offer different ways to approach encounters. Larian explicitly connects custom-character choices with race, class, and appearance, and describes class and background as role-play options. That makes Baldur’s Gate 3 a grounded example for players interested in build identity and role-play together; it does not prove that every choice changes play to the same degree.

Players also ask for “classes that feel different from each other.” That is a useful preference to keep in mind when comparing games, but it comes from an individual discussion, not a broad player survey.

If identity and story context matter

Check whether a game connects selected background, class, or other identity choices to dialogue and story events. Larian describes class and background as sources of role-play options in Baldur’s Gate 3. EA lists backstory among the choices for Rook in The Veilguard. Those descriptions show that both games offer character choices beyond appearance, but they do not establish how often or how extensively each choice changes the story or the world’s reactions.

Check platform details before choosing

For The Veilguard, EA says the Rook made in the character creator can be carried into the full game on the same platform. Confirm current platform availability and the relevant edition before making a purchase decision; the creator feature alone does not identify a recommended platform or edition.

Player discussions also show that “good character customization” can mean very different things—from abundant appearance choices to classes that feel distinct. Those comments are useful examples of individual priorities, not evidence of a consensus or a genre-wide ranking.
