To craft a regular piston in Minecraft, place three planks across the top row of a crafting table, cobblestone in the four corners, an iron ingot in the center, and redstone dust in the bottom-center slot. To make a sticky piston, combine a piston with one slimeball.
Regular piston recipe
Use a crafting table’s 3×3 grid and arrange the ingredients like this:
| Top row | Middle row | Bottom row |
|---|---|---|
| Any plank | Any plank | Any plank |
| Cobblestone | Iron ingot | Cobblestone |
| Cobblestone | Redstone dust | Cobblestone |
The recipe makes one piston. It uses three planks, four cobblestone, one iron ingot, and one redstone dust. The arrangement is corroborated by the Pearson preview recipe diagram and the Minecraft Wiki crafting table.

How to make a sticky piston
Place one piston and one slimeball in a crafting grid to make a sticky piston. The two items can be arranged in either order. Minecraft’s official sticky-piston guide describes the process as making a piston first, then adding a slimeball.
Which piston should you use?
| Type | Recipe | What it does | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular piston | Three planks, four cobblestone, one iron ingot, and one redstone dust | Pushes blocks when powered by redstone | Moving a block or pushing a row of blocks |
| Sticky piston | One piston and one slimeball | Pushes a block when powered and can pull the block touching its head back when power is removed | Hidden doors, traps, crop harvesting, and water-flow automation |
The use examples come from Minecraft’s sticky-piston guide. Its movement range is limited: a sticky piston moves blocks one block at a time.
How far can pistons move blocks?
A powered piston can push up to twelve blocks in a row, according to Minecraft’s piston guide. Sticky pistons can pull back the block touching their head when their redstone power is removed; they do not pull a whole row back.
