For a four-person group seeking a shared story, Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition offer online party play; Divinity also supports two-player split-screen. For real-time combat, Diablo IV is the action-RPG alternative, with Blizzard recommending four players for its Dark Citadel challenge. These games suit different kinds of groups, and their co-op modes are not interchangeable.

Baldur’s Gate 3: a shared fantasy campaign

Larian describes Baldur’s Gate 3 as an RPG set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons and confirms online multiplayer for up to four players. It is a natural fit if your group wants to move through a shared fantasy campaign together rather than focus mainly on repeatable combat activities.

The cited official page does not establish local co-op details or the current platform list. Check the listing for the platform and edition your group plans to use before buying; do not assume that a mode or platform detail applies across every version.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition: online or two-player split-screen

Bandai Namco describes Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition as a narrative-driven RPG in which the world and story react to players’ actions. Its official page specifically lists single-player, two-player split-screen, and a four-player online party.

  • PERFECT GIFT FOR BOARD GAME LOVERS – An ideal gift for RPG fans, strategy game enthusiasts, and solo board game players. Great for ages 14 and up. Compact box fits easily in any game shelf or travel bag.

That distinction makes it the clearest option here if some friends want to play together in the same room while others may join online. The split-screen support is for two players, not four; the four-player mode listed by the publisher is online.

Prefer real-time combat? Consider Diablo IV

Diablo IV offers a different rhythm: Blizzard says its campaign can be played solo or alongside friends, with progress syncing to the party leader. Blizzard’s Dark Citadel update recommends a party of four for that co-op challenge, making it a relevant pick for groups drawn to real-time action and combat-focused activities.

Keep the group-size claim specific: the four-player recommendation applies to the Dark Citadel challenge. The cited campaign overview does not give a general maximum party size, so it does not support treating every part of Diablo IV as a confirmed four-player mode. The cited pages also do not establish local split-screen support.

in Dreams - a Slightly Surreal Storytelling Game for one Player (14+)
  • In Dreams is a slightly surreal storytelling game for one, which uses vivid imagery and evocative prompts to immerse you in a dreamworld you wouldn’t have otherwise imagined.
  • In this storytelling solo game, the player writes a story in which a character in a dreamworld must complete a specific goal before waking. The player begins by drawing cards to create a randomized character with a starting temperament. Card draws will also determine the goal the character must achieve by the dream's end in order for the player to win.
  • Storytelling then begins by drawings cards to create an Encounter. An Encounter consists of 2-4 short prompts as well as a location. All Encounter cards include surreal artwork to help inspire fresh and creative interpretations each game. The player must immediately write about the generated Encounter, including all of the prompts and the location while attempting to move the character closer to their goal.
  • Some Encounters will prompt the player to generate an Event. Two cards from the Event deck will determine what is happening as well as the tone. These cards too include surreal artwork for inspiration. Events are resolved in the same manner as Encounters.
  • The game continues, with the player drawing and resolving Encounters and Events through storytelling until the character's goal is met.

Check these details before choosing

  • Decide where everyone will play. Of these three, the official evidence explicitly confirms same-room split-screen only for two players in Divinity: Original Sin 2 – Definitive Edition. The other listed player counts refer to online play or a specific co-op challenge.
  • Match the game to your group’s preferred pace. Choose a story-led party RPG for a shared narrative and character-driven play; choose Diablo IV if your group wants real-time action.
  • Verify platform and edition for your group. The cited feature pages do not settle every current platform, regional availability, or purchase-format question. Check the official listing for the exact version you plan to play.
