The best Minecraft alternative depends on what you want to keep: freeform block building, crafting and survival, exploration, or playing with friends. Minecraft itself has no set goal: Creative mode focuses on building, while Survival adds exploration, resource gathering, crafting, combat, health, and hunger. None of the games below replaces all of those at once, so choose by gameplay loop—and confirm platform, price, and online features for your region before buying or downloading.
Quick picks: which Minecraft alternative fits you?
| Game | Best for | What changes from Minecraft | Cost category in the cited roundup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luanti (formerly Minetest) | Freeform block sandboxing | The closest free block-building candidate in the roundup; community content and modding are its proposed appeal. | Free, according to the roundup; confirm current terms and platform availability. |
| Terraria | Mining, crafting, exploration, and combat progression | A 2D world with a stronger focus on bosses, gear, and progression. | Paid. |
| Dragon Quest Builders 2 | Story-led construction and town building | Quests and goals guide building rather than leaving the experience entirely open-ended. | Paid. |
| Valheim | Co-op survival and challenging progression | Combat, biome and boss progression, and structural building rules matter more. | Paid; check the store for current status and price. |
| No Man’s Sky | Planetary exploration and base construction | Crafting and bases sit within a space-exploration game; it is not a block-building substitute. | Paid. |
| Subnautica | Solo survival and underwater exploration | Crafting and bases support a focused underwater survival experience, not a traditional multiplayer sandbox. | Paid. |
| Roblox | Trying many player-made experiences | A platform of varied user-created games, not one consistent Minecraft-style survival loop. | Free-to-play with optional purchases, according to the roundup. |
| LEGO Fortnite | Guided co-op survival and village building | More guided and less freeform in block-by-block construction. | Listed among the roundup’s free options; verify current store terms. |
| Creativerse | Free-to-play voxel survival | A voxel survival option, but its current availability and platforms were not independently verified. | Free-to-play, according to the roundup; verify status before choosing. |
| Trove | Voxel MMO progression and loot | Classes and MMO progression take priority over open-ended survival building. | Listed among the roundup’s free options; verify current store terms. |
| LEGO Worlds | Casual creative building | LEGO-themed construction with less survival depth. | Paid. |
The cost categories above reflect how the comparison roundup classifies the games, not verified regional prices or a guarantee that every title remains available on every platform. The roundup also discusses Don’t Starve Together and Vintage Story; they are useful niche picks, but the eleven above provide a broader mix of building, survival, exploration, and multiplayer styles.

Best free Minecraft alternatives
Luanti (formerly Minetest): closest to block-by-block building
If you mainly want to place and shape blocks in a sandbox, Luanti is the strongest match in this selection. The comparison roundup highlights its community content and modding as reasons to try it. Current official platform details and exact features are not established here, so check Luanti’s official site and the relevant app or game listing for your device before installing.
Roblox: a library of different games, not one replacement
Roblox is best for players who want to sample many community-made experiences. Because each experience can have a different design and rules, it does not provide one consistent combination of Minecraft-style building and survival. The roundup describes it as free-to-play with optional purchases; check the specific experience and current platform terms.
#1 Best Overall
- Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
- Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
- Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
- Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
LEGO Fortnite: guided survival with friends
Choose LEGO Fortnite if the appeal is cooperative survival, crafting, and building a village. Its construction is more guided and less freely block-by-block than Minecraft’s, so it is a better fit for a structured co-op loop than for unrestricted creative building. It appears among the roundup’s free options, but verify availability and any current purchase terms in your store.
Creativerse and Trove: different kinds of voxel games
Creativerse is described by the roundup as a free-to-play voxel survival game, but its current status and platform support have not been independently verified. Trove uses a voxel look too, yet its classes, loot, and MMO progression make it a weaker choice if open-ended survival construction is your main goal. Both are included in the roundup’s free options; check whether each is currently available for your device and region.

Paid games that keep mining, crafting, or building
Terraria: the strongest pick for mining and progression
Terraria retains mining, crafting, exploration, and building, but presents them in 2D rather than Minecraft’s three-dimensional block world. Its appeal leans toward finding gear, fighting bosses, and progressing through combat challenges. Pick it for a deep sandbox adventure, not for a like-for-like 3D building experience.
Dragon Quest Builders 2: construction with a story and goals
Dragon Quest Builders 2 pairs block construction and crafting with story quests and town-building objectives. That structure can help if you want a reason to build and a guided progression path; it is less suited to someone who wants a mostly self-directed sandbox.
Rank #3
LEGO Worlds: relaxed creative construction
LEGO Worlds is a casual choice for LEGO-themed creative building. The trade-off is less survival depth, so it is better for playful construction than for reproducing Minecraft’s gathering, hunger, and survival loop.
Best alternatives for survival, exploration, and co-op
Valheim: co-op survival with tougher progression
Valheim suits players who want survival and base-building alongside co-op, biome exploration, and boss progression. Compared with Minecraft, combat and progression carry more weight, and building has structural rules. It is not the pick for unrestricted block placement, but it is a strong direction if you want a more demanding survival journey with friends.
Rank #4
- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
No Man’s Sky: build bases across a space-exploration game
No Man’s Sky combines exploration, crafting, survival elements, and base construction across a planetary and space-travel setting. Its bases are not the same as a block-by-block Minecraft build, so think of it as an exploration and construction alternative rather than a voxel sandbox.
Subnautica: focused solo survival underwater
Subnautica centers on underwater exploration and survival, with crafting and bases supporting that experience. It is a better fit for a focused solo adventure than for multiplayer sandbox building.

Two more niche options: Don’t Starve Together and Vintage Story
Don’t Starve Together is a punishing co-op survival game, not a close visual or building match. Vintage Story is described by the roundup as block-based survival with deeper, slower crafting systems. Check Vintage Story’s current purchase and platform information directly before deciding; neither game is a broad substitute for all of Minecraft’s modes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose the right game
- Start with the activity you want most. Choose Luanti for block-focused sandboxing, Terraria for 2D mining and progression, Dragon Quest Builders 2 for quest-led construction, Valheim for co-op survival, or No Man’s Sky and Subnautica for exploration-led bases.
- Check your device and the exact edition. Minecraft’s official overview lists Windows, Mac, Linux, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Fire OS/TV, Android, and iOS. That breadth does not mean alternatives are available on the same systems. Check each game’s official page or your platform’s store for current availability.
- Confirm multiplayer and cross-play before inviting friends. A game may support co-op or online play without supporting cross-play between the devices your group owns. The available comparisons do not establish current cross-play rules for every title.
- Check the current price and purchase model in your region. Free-to-play can include optional purchases, and a game’s listing, availability, or price can change. Use the relevant official store rather than relying on a roundup’s cost category.
- Look at release status and progression style. If you want a finished, self-directed sandbox, make sure the game’s current release status and content match that preference. For a guided story, boss ladder, or MMO progression, choose with those built-in goals in mind.
Where Hytale fits in 2026
Hytale entered Early Access on January 13, 2026. In its announcement, the Hytale Team wrote, “The moment has arrived, Hytale is releasing into Early Access today!” The same announcement listed the Starter Edition at $19.99 USD at that time and warned that the game was unpolished and incomplete, with bugs and missing features expected. Treat that figure as the announcement-time price, not a guaranteed current price; check the official store for today’s price, availability, and product details.
Before that launch, founder Simon Collins-Laflamme announced on November 17, 2025 that Hytale had been reacquired from Riot Games, writing, “Hytale is saved.” That announcement said Windows would be the launch platform, with Linux and Mac to be attempted and other platforms much later. These are dated development statements, not confirmation of Hytale’s current platform lineup. Hytale is therefore a relevant game to check if you want a new block-building alternative, but its Early Access status at release means it should not be presented as a complete, stable substitute.
