The best multiplayer VR game depends on what your group wants to do together: socialize, solve puzzles, play a sport, or compete. Start by matching the game to your group’s preferred style, then check that everyone owns a compatible version and that the lobby supports your group size. Crossplay, price, and platform support vary by title, so there is no reliable one-size-fits-all winner.
Choose by the kind of play night you want
Multiplayer VR covers several distinct formats. A social world is not a substitute for a private co-op puzzle, and a competitive shooter may be a poor fit for a group looking for relaxed conversation. Use the categories below to narrow the search, then verify the current listing for the exact game edition and platform.
Social and party play
Choose social or party games when the point is spending time together, meeting other players, or taking turns in short activities. Check whether the game offers private sessions if your group wants to stay together rather than join a public space.
Relaxed casual play
Mini golf and similar low-pressure activities can suit groups that want a shared game without the intensity of a shooter. Still check movement options and session setup: “casual” does not guarantee that a game will be comfortable for every player.

Co-op puzzles and adventures
Co-op games give the group a shared task rather than a head-to-head contest. Elsewhere Electric is one example of an asymmetric escape-room format: UploadVR describes a VR player navigating alongside a partner using a mobile app. That means the whole group may not need a headset, but it is not ordinary headset-to-headset crossplay. UploadVR’s overview: cross-platform VR games.
Sports and simulation
Sports simulations, including table tennis, offer a recognizable activity that can work well for short matches. Consider how much arm and body movement your group wants, and whether the title supports the platforms everyone owns.

- Can be redeemed on over 500 apps, games and experiences in the Meta Quest store.

Competitive shooters and battle royale
These games are for groups who want skill-based matches and higher intensity. Confirm private-match options, party size, and whether all players can join the same matchmaking pool before choosing one for a mixed-platform group.
Check platform compatibility before inviting everyone
“Multiplayer” does not mean “crossplay.” A title may support online play while restricting matches to a specific headset, store, or game edition. Meta Quest, PC VR/SteamVR, PS VR2, Pico, and mobile companion apps are distinct participation routes; check the exact listing and the developer’s description of crossplay scope.

- Among Us 3D VR: UploadVR describes crossplay across Steam, Quest, Pico, and PS VR2. Verify that the current edition and each player’s store version match the claim.
- Elsewhere Electric: UploadVR describes Quest and Steam support with asymmetric participation between a VR player and a mobile-app partner.
- Tetris Effect: Connected: UploadVR reports Quest, Steam, and PS VR2 availability and says crossplay was added with the Connected release on Steam in 2021. Check the current listing and supported multiplayer modes before planning a session.
These are examples, not a crossplay rule for other games. Meta’s official Matches with friends category can help Quest owners discover multiplayer titles, but it does not establish that a game supports another platform or every online mode.
Compare the details that determine whether your group can play
For each candidate, look up the same practical details on its current store listing. Prices and availability can depend on region, and online features can change after release.

- Exact platform and edition: Confirm the headset, store, and game version for every player. PC VR may require a VR-capable PC; a standalone Quest title does not necessarily have the same listing or features as its PC counterpart.
- Crossplay scope: Look for the specific platforms and modes that can play together, not just a general “online multiplayer” label.
- Player cap and private play: Check the maximum lobby size and whether you can create a private room. A title’s online player count may not equal the number of friends who can join one session.
- Price and online requirements: Confirm the current regional price, whether the game is free-to-play or paid, and any platform subscription or account requirements shown by the store.
- Comfort and setup: Decide whether the group wants active movement, seated play, or a mobile companion role. The sources here do not provide standardized comfort ratings, so use each game’s movement and accessibility information rather than assuming a genre is comfortable for everyone.
Do you need a particular headset?
No single headset is required for every game in this guide. Meta describes Quest 3 as supporting its Quest app and game catalog, as well as optional PC connection through Meta Quest Link Cable or Air Link. That makes it one possible standalone route for Quest games and a possible route to PC VR, not a requirement for games on SteamVR or PS VR2. Check the game’s own platform listing before buying hardware.
Industry survey figures can provide context, but they cannot tell players which game to choose. In its 2026 State of the Game Industry report, the Game Developers Conference says 8% of respondents had worked on VR/AR/MR within the past year, a subgroup of fewer than 100 people. Among 94 respondents answering the platform question, 82% selected Meta Quest / Horizon Store, 37% Steam VR, and 21% PlayStation VR/VR2 for their most recent project. These were multiple-select responses about developers’ projects—not player counts, sales shares, or a quality ranking. Game Developers Conference, 2026 report.

The same report separates developers’ platform interest from recent project work: among developers interested in making VR/AR/MR games, 68% selected Steam VR and 64% Meta Quest / Horizon Store. Those figures describe a different respondent group from the 94-person recent-project platform sample; neither set predicts which platform has the best multiplayer games.
How to make a shortlist for your group
- Agree on the activity. Decide whether the session should be social, cooperative, casual, sporty, or competitive.
- List everyone’s hardware. Include headset model, store or PC VR access, and whether anyone can only join through a companion app.
- Find games with an explicit match. Check official store listings for each platform, crossplay details, lobby size, and private-room support.
- Compare the actual cost and setup. Check current regional pricing and requirements, then consider movement intensity and whether a PC connection is needed.
- Choose for the least-compatible player. A game the entire group can join is usually a better multiplayer pick than a higher-rated title that excludes one friend.
What a developer survey can—and cannot—tell you
Platform figures are easy to misread as proof of what players own or what will remain supported. The GDC 2026 report measures developers’ reported work and interest. Its percentages are multiple-select answers, so they should not be added together as though they were exclusive market shares. Use them as limited context about development activity, not as a substitute for checking current game listings.
Meta’s Quest 3 page presents gaming as one use of the headset and explains access to Quest apps and games plus PC connectivity options: Meta Quest 3. That information is useful if a standalone Quest route suits your group; it does not make Quest hardware universal for multiplayer VR.
