Best Fallout Games: Which One Should You Play?

The best Fallout game depends on what you want from the Wasteland: branching choices, exploration and building, multiplayer, or the series’ 3D open-world transition.

There is no single best Fallout game for every player. Choose Fallout: New Vegas for branching storylines and faction politics, Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition for exploration, settlement building, and a broad included-content bundle, or Fallout 76 if playing online with others is the priority. Fallout 3 is the pick for experiencing the series’ move into a 3D open world.

Best Fallout game by playstyle

Branching narrative and faction choices Fallout: New Vegas Bethesda’s recommendation guide points players seeking branching stories and consequential choices toward New Vegas, whose central conflict involves competing factions. Current platform and edition availability were not established here, so check the relevant storefront before buying.
Exploration, settlements, and a large content bundle Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition It combines the base game, six official add-ons, and more than 150 Creation Club items. The Switch 2 edition includes the Creations in the game but has no in-game Creations menu.
Online multiplayer Fallout 76 Bethesda describes it as an online open-world multiplayer role-playing game and recommends it to players who prefer multiplayer. Its defining format is online multiplayer, so it is not the closest match if you specifically want a purely solo game.
The series’ first Bethesda-era 3D open-world approach Fallout 3 It moves the series into a 3D open world, set around Washington, D.C. Its Game of the Year Edition historically included five add-ons, but that package detail does not establish current storefront availability.

These are recommendations by fit, not an objective franchise-wide ranking. Bethesda’s own guide frames the choice around a player’s ideal Wasteland activity and playstyle; the distinctions above focus on story choices, solo versus multiplayer, exploration and building, and edition details.

What makes each recommendation different

Fallout: New Vegas: choose for factions and consequential decisions

New Vegas is the strongest match when the central appeal is navigating competing interests and shaping a branching narrative. Bethesda specifically recommends it for players looking for branching story and consequential choices. This is a preference-based recommendation, not a claim that it is universally superior or the best technical starting point.

Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition: choose for a broad solo-world package

The Anniversary Edition pairs the Commonwealth’s exploration and settlement-building focus with a substantial collection of included content. Bethesda’s current product materials list the base game, all six official add-ons, and more than 150 Creation Club items. That makes the edition especially straightforward for someone who wants the game and its documented add-on bundle together.

#1 Best Overall
Fallout 4 Game of The Year Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Freedom and Liberty Do whatever you want in a massive open world with hundreds of locations, characters, and quests. Join multiple factions vying for power or go it alone, the choices are all yours
  • Be whoever you want with the special character system. From a power Armored soldier to the charismatic smooth talker, you can choose from hundreds of perks and develop your own playstyle
  • New next generation graphics and lighting engine brings to life the world of fallout. From the blasted forests of the common wealth to the ruins of Boston, every location is packed with dynamic detail
  • Intense first or third person combat can also be slowed down with the new dynamic Vault Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S) that lets you choose your attacks and enjoy cinematic carnage

Fallout 76: choose for online play

Fallout 76 is built around online play with others. Bethesda’s franchise timeline places it 25 years after the Great War of 2077; that is the game’s in-universe setting, not a real-world date or statistic. If shared online play is not what you want, another entry is a closer fit.

Fallout 3: choose for the 3D open-world transition

Fallout 3 is a natural choice if you want to see the series’ transition from its earlier 2D role-playing format to a 3D open world. Bethesda’s older Anthology announcement lists five add-ons for the Game of the Year Edition: The Pitt, Operation: Anchorage, Broken Steel, Point Lookout, and Mothership Zeta. Treat that as a record of the edition’s contents, not confirmation that it is currently sold or available on a particular platform.

How to pick your first Fallout

  1. Decide whether you want multiplayer. If playing online with others is the point, start with Fallout 76. If you want a solo-focused choice, compare the other entries instead.
  2. Choose story agency or exploration and building. Favor New Vegas for faction politics and branching choices; favor Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition for exploration, settlement building, and its documented bundle.
  3. Consider historical context. Pick Fallout 3 if seeing the series’ 3D open-world transition matters more than selecting the broadest current bundle.
  4. Verify the exact version before buying older games. Storefront availability, region, platform compatibility, and edition contents can differ; current details for New Vegas and Fallout 3 are not established here.
