Best indie games for PC by player preference
Hades: fast combat with story between runs
Hades on Steam suits players who want real-time combat to lead, with story and character relationships unfolding as they make repeated attempts. Its Steam description highlights Olympian boons, permanent upgrades, and an evolving story. The changing combination of run rewards supports experimentation, while progression continues beyond a failed attempt.
Steam classifies Hades as indie, action, and RPG. At the time of the 2026 listing snapshot, 98% of 142,809 English-language Steam reviews were positive. That is a time-sensitive Valve store-page figure, not an independent measure of quality.
#1 Best Overall
- Delve is a dungeon building adventure that combines tile laying, dice-driven combat, and an immersive narrative experience in a charming fantasy setting
- Delvers place dungeon tiles, explore the dangers Lurking around every corner, and search for loot
- Each dungeon-exploring adventure will offer a one-of-a-kind experience!
Hades II: a fully released sequel for another mythic action run
Hades II on Steam follows Melinoë and builds its action and story around witchcraft, new locations, and evolving runs. It is the clearest fit here for someone who wants the Hades-style mix of fast action and repeat attempts, but with a different protagonist and setting. Steam records its full release date as September 25, 2025, so it is not an Early Access release in this 2026 guide.
Its listed minimum Windows requirements are Windows 10 64-bit, a dual-core 2.4 GHz processor, 8 GB RAM, GTX 950, Radeon R7 360, or Intel HD Graphics 630 graphics, and 11 GB of storage. The recommended listing calls for 16 GB RAM and a GTX 2060, Radeon RX 5600 XT, or Intel Arc A580. These are the requirements shown on Steam’s listing, which may change.
Balatro: turn poker hands into a deckbuilding strategy
Balatro on Steam is for players who would rather plan combinations than dodge attacks. Its poker-inspired roguelike deckbuilding asks you to shape runs around hands and Joker effects, making it a distinct alternative to action-led games. It is not a poker simulator: the appeal is the strategic interaction of cards and modifiers.
Steam classifies Balatro as an indie strategy game and credits LocalThunk as developer and Playstack as publisher. Its listed Windows minimums include an Intel Core i3 processor, 1 GB RAM, integrated graphics, and 150 MB of storage. At the time of the 2026 listing snapshot, 98% of 104,833 English-language Steam reviews were positive; this is a changeable store-page snapshot, not a quality guarantee.

Stardew Valley: a slower, open-ended change of pace
Stardew Valley on Steam is the pick for players who want their progress to come from farming, crafting, exploring, and building relationships rather than clearing combat runs. Steam tags it as a farming and life simulation and lists both single-player and co-op. That makes it the most natural choice in this group for a relaxed solo routine or a shared farm.
At the time of the 2026 listing snapshot, 98% of 395,441 English-language Steam reviews were positive. Like the other review figures here, this is a Valve listing snapshot that can change.
Rank #4
- Deep, interesting mysteries to solve
- Easy to Learn
- Cooperative play for up to eight players
How these games differ in difficulty, pace, and play style
- For real-time action: Choose Hades or Hades II. Both make combat and repeated runs central, so they fit players who want moment-to-moment execution alongside progression.
- For turn-based planning: Choose Balatro. Its challenge centers on card choices and combinations rather than movement or reflexes.
- For open-ended play: Choose Stardew Valley if you prefer to set your own goals across farming, relationships, crafting, and exploration.
- For narrative emphasis: Hades and Hades II pair their run structures with evolving stories; Stardew Valley makes relationships part of its life-simulation framework. Balatro is the more strategy-first option.
- For co-op: Stardew Valley is the only one of these four whose Steam listing identifies co-op. Confirm the current listing for its specific mode and requirements.
Difficulty is not a simple ranking across these genres. Hades and Hades II ask for real-time combat skill; Balatro tests strategic decisions within a run; Stardew Valley gives players more control over pace and goals. The store pages establish their genres and features, but they do not provide a like-for-like difficulty measure.

PC requirements vary substantially even among these four recommendations. Steam lists Hades II at a higher minimum memory requirement than Balatro, whose listed minimum is 1 GB RAM and 150 MB storage. Those figures are specific to each game’s current store listing and do not predict the requirements of other indie games.
Best Value
- Open the game’s current Steam product page and check the Windows system requirements, not a different edition or platform listing.
- Compare the listed minimum processor, memory, graphics hardware, operating system, and storage with your PC.
- If your system is close to the minimum, check the current listing and recent player reports before purchasing; requirements and compatibility information can change.

How to choose among these PC indie games
- Pick Hades if you want action combat with character-driven progression.
- Pick Hades II if you want a fully released follow-up centered on Melinoë and witchcraft.
- Pick Balatro if you want a compact, turn-based strategy loop built around poker-inspired hands and card synergies.
- Pick Stardew Valley if you want a more open-ended simulation, especially if co-op matters.
