For the widest range of sports in one Nintendo 3DS game, start with Mario Sports Superstars: Nintendo lists football, baseball, golf, tennis and horse racing, plus individual single-player modes. Its former online features no longer work, however. If you would rather focus on a particular sport, Mario Golf: World Tour and Mario Tennis Open are other 3DS titles to consider.

Mario Sports Superstars for variety
Mario Sports Superstars is the clearest variety-first choice: Nintendo’s product page describes five sports in one game—football, baseball, golf, tennis and horse racing—and lists individual single-player modes. Nintendo gives its European release date as March 10, 2017. The same page describes local and online multiplayer, but online play is no longer available on 3DS.

Mario Golf: World Tour for a golf-focused option

Mario Tennis Open for a tennis-focused option

What matters for playing on the go?
For a portable sports game, first decide whether you want several sports in one title or a game centered on one sport. The strongest documented distinction among these candidates is that Mario Sports Superstars bundles five. Nintendo identifies individual single-player modes for it, while the manuals index confirms the other games’ platform and titles but does not establish comparable solo features, session length, difficulty or offline replay value.
Local multiplayer and online multiplayer are not interchangeable. Nintendo listed both for Mario Sports Superstars, but only local play remains a usable multiplayer option through the features described on that product page; Nintendo’s 3DS online services have since ended. Do not choose a game expecting its former online play, rankings or other internet-connected functions to remain available.

What 3DS online and eShop changes mean now
Nintendo ended online play and other 3DS software functionality using online communication on April 8, 2024. Nintendo says this includes features such as online cooperative play, internet rankings and data distribution. Nintendo eShop purchases for 3DS ended on March 27, 2023, so these games cannot be newly purchased digitally through that shop.
