There is no source-backed universal best weapon in Nioh 3. The right pick depends on the reach, speed, power, Ki pressure, and complexity you want—and on the Attack, Break, Block, and special effects of the specific weapon you equip. Use this guide as a practical shortlist, not an official tier ranking.
The base-game manuals list seven weapon categories for Samurai and seven for Ninja. The later Hell Rising expansion adds Hoko and Shield weapons to both styles, so the lists below are explicitly the base-game roster.

How to choose a weapon in Nioh 3
Start with the combat problem you want your weapon to solve: do you need reach, fast repeated attacks, heavy hits, pressure on enemy Ki, a ranged option, or a style that rewards more adaptation? The official descriptions frame weapons as tradeoffs, not as winners in a universal ranking. Your specific item’s stats and effects matter too.
- For balanced, straightforward combat: try the Samurai Sword.
- For reach and broad attacks: try the Spear or a Ninja Splitstaff.
- For slower, forceful hits: consider the Odachi or Axe.
- For fast repeated attacks: look at Dual Swords, Talons, or Tonfa.
- For range options: try Ninja Hatchets, which can be thrown.
- For a weapon that changes its approach: consider the Switchglaive or Splitstaff.
These are starting points based on the official weapon descriptions, not measured damage comparisons.

#1 Best Overall
Base-game Samurai weapons
The official Nioh 3 manual lists seven Samurai weapon categories. Their stated strengths suggest different ways to manage reach, speed, and attack commitment.
| Weapon | What it offers | Best fit if you want… |
|---|---|---|
| Sword | Balanced Attack, reach, and speed; described as easy to wield. | A flexible, approachable option without a pronounced tradeoff. |
| Spear | Long reach and broad attacks; sweeping attacks can leave defensive openings. | Distance and wide coverage, while paying attention to recovery and defense. |
| Odachi | Slower attacks, greater reach, and higher Attack power. | Longer reach and heavier attacks over speed. |
| Dual Swords | Relatively low Attack, offset by quick repeated attacks. | Rapid attack sequences rather than emphasis on a single heavy hit. |
| Switchglaive | Changes between guillotine, glaive, and scythe forms according to stance. | A weapon whose form and fighting style adapt with your stance. |
| Axe | Slow, powerful attacks that are difficult to wield. | High Attack power and deliberate, committed strikes. The manual notes that its attacks are difficult to counter. |
| Cestuses | Support repeated hits and techniques focused on individual strikes. | A close-in style built around strings of hits and focused techniques. |
The manual describes the Switchglaive as adaptable, saying: “This adaptable weapon allows you to change your fighting style to suit the situation.” That flexibility is a reason to try it if you enjoy adjusting your approach, not proof that it outperforms other weapons.

Base-game Ninja weapons
The Ninja roster also has seven categories in the base-game manual. It includes short-range, fast options alongside weapons with throws, reach, or more involved attack patterns.
| Weapon | What it offers | Best fit if you want… |
|---|---|---|
| Ninja Swords | Trade some Attack and reach compared with Samurai swords for quick attacks and rapid dodges. | Fast movement and quick attacks, accepting reduced reach and Attack relative to Samurai swords. |
| Dual Ninja Swords | Many attacks and acrobatic abilities. | An attack-rich style with acrobatic options. |
| Hatchets | Work at close range and can be thrown; the manual says they can whittle down Life and Ki. | A close-range weapon with a throwing option. |
| Talons | Short reach but very high attack speed. | Fast attacks at close range. |
| Kusarigama | Longer-range weight attacks combine with quick sickle attacks; the style is complex. | Mixed attack ranges and a more demanding weapon style. |
| Splitstaves | Exceptional reach and the ability to transform during attacks. | Reach and attacks that change form as you use them. |
| Tonfa | Short reach and relatively low Attack, balanced by quick repeated attacks and Ki pressure. | Fast close-range attacks and pressure on enemy Ki. |
Pair Samurai and Ninja weapons around your needs
You do not have to treat Samurai and Ninja as competing loadouts. Koei Tecmo says you can switch between the two styles instantly or stay in one style. Each has separate equipment loadouts for weapons, armor, accessories, and Guardian Spirits.

A practical pairing covers different situations rather than duplicating the same strength. For example, you could pair a long-reaching Samurai Spear with fast Ninja Talons, or a balanced Samurai Sword with Ninja Hatchets for the latter’s throwing option. These are examples of complementary traits, not claims that a particular pairing is optimal.
Team NINJA describes Ninja movement as including Evade and aerial actions. Its official system page says a successful Evade recovers Ki and replenishes Ninjutsu and Arts gauges. If you prefer mobile play, consider whether a Ninja weapon’s reach and attack pattern suit the movement you want to use.

Check the weapon you actually have equipped
Weapon categories describe general behavior; they do not make every copy identical. The equipment manual says weapons have different Attack, Break, Block, and special-effect values, and that familiarity enhances special effects. Compare the item in your inventory before deciding that a type is underperforming or that one category is automatically better for your character.
- Compare Attack, Break, and Block on the actual weapons you are considering.
- Read each item’s special effects and account for familiarity.
- Choose for the moves and range you enjoy, not just the category name.
- When comparing styles, account for their separate equipment loadouts.
What changes with Hell Rising
The base-game lists above are not the full roster after the Hell Rising expansion. In an August 18, 2026 interview with TechRadar, game director Atsushi Takahashi said the expansion introduces Hoko and Shield weapons for both Samurai and Ninja. That means the expansion adds two weapon types per style; the base-game category lists should not be presented as the unqualified current total.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTakahashi described Hoko and Shield as combining offense and defense: “Their defining trait is that they combine offense and defense into one.” He also said: “With these weapons, however, you can read the timing of an enemy’s attack and, by parrying at just the right moment, deflect it and immediately counter with your own attack.” The interview distinguishes this timed defense-and-counter approach from the base Samurai Deflect skill. For Ninja Hoko and Shield, the interview also describes throwing, riding, and combining with spear attacks.
Is there a single best Nioh 3 weapon?
The available official descriptions do not establish a universal winner, a patch-specific ranking, or measured damage comparisons across weapons. Treat “best” as a fit for your preferred combat feel and the specific item’s stats. If you are unsure where to start, try one balanced option, one reach-focused option, and one fast option from the tables, then keep the moveset that feels most useful to you.
