The Paintress is the Act II boss atop the Monolith, fought after Renoir. She has no listed elemental weakness, resistance, or absorption, so build around damage you can land reliably and defense you can execute consistently. Learn her attack rhythms, parry repeated strikes, and jump the ground wave in her ranged sequence before defending against the follow-up beams.
This guide follows the visible stages of the fight; older guides may count transitions differently. Spoilers are limited to the encounter and its immediate outcome.

Prepare for the encounter
There is no elemental counter to build around: the Expedition 33 Wiki guide lists no weakness, resistance, or absorption for the Paintress. Choose a party and skills that suit your build, with a balance of dependable damage and defensive confidence. No single required party or universally optimal setup is established.
Favor reliable multi-hit damage
The Expedition 33 Wiki guide, updated September 24, 2026, reports a 9,999 per-hit damage cap before New Game+. That makes stacking several hits a practical approach rather than relying on one oversized strike. The guide gives Maelle in Virtuose Stance using Gustave’s Homage as an example, not a requirement.

Treat the fight as a reaction test
As the official Bandai Namco game page puts it, “In this evolution of JRPGs, real-time actions enhance the heart of turn-based combat.” The encounter puts that idea into practice: watch animations and screen cues, then choose whether to parry, dodge, jump, or use Free Aim.
Phase one: learn the attack cues
The first stage mixes several attack patterns. The current guide lists seven Void meteors, a Gradient Attack, four Chroma waves, five Chroma explosions scattered across the party, and three rocks aimed at the group. Its general advice is to parry these attacks.

Void meteors and the Gradient Attack
For the meteor sequence, watch the leftmost meteor orb flash; use it as a cue to practice the parry rhythm. Before the Gradient Attack, the screen shifts to black and white. Use that visual change to prepare for its parry rather than guessing from the attack name alone.
Chroma waves, explosions, and rocks
Parry the first Chroma waves, but do not assume the fourth arrives immediately: it is delayed. Listen for the Chroma orb’s cue during the explosion sequence. When the rocks move toward the party, parry their approach. These are practical visual and audio cues, not guaranteed frame timings; adjust to the rhythm you see in your own fight.

The transition to the next stage is tied to depleting the first stage’s health. Guides represent the health bars and transformation differently, so rely on the visible change into the giant Paintress rather than a universal percentage.
Phase two: defend against the giant Paintress
The giant Paintress uses a three-swing light-brush combo, a five-hit downward sequence, a five-orb rift attack, and a seven-swing lunge. The current guide describes these as parryable. Keep defending through the full sequence: some combos delay their final hit, which can catch a parry timed as if the attack were already over.

Handle the ranged sequence
When the Paintress sends a ground wave followed by beams and a final blast, jump over the wave first, then parry the remaining attacks. The order matters: jumping is the response to the ground wave, while the later hits call for defense.
Separate Curse from the Paintress’s shields
Corrupted Chroma applies Curse and, according to the current guide, adds shields to the Paintress. Use Free Aim shots to remove those shields, one shot per shield. Gameranx also describes floating orbs that can be shot to extend the time cursed characters have before they die. Those orbs serve a different defensive purpose from removing the Paintress’s shields; respond to the mechanic you can currently see rather than treating all floating targets as the same object.

Final phase: finish the encounter
After the major attacks, the fight becomes low-risk. Use the remaining opening to finish the encounter and proceed to the story scene.
Quick Recap
What to focus on during the fight
- Do not spend preparation time chasing an elemental weakness; none is listed.
- Prioritize attack rhythms and visible cues over memorizing unverified frame timings.
- Parry repeated sequences, but account for delayed final hits.
- Jump the ground wave before defending against the ranged follow-up.
- Use Free Aim for the specific shield-removal or floating-orb mechanic you see.
- For damage, consider a multi-hit approach; the cited 9,999 cap applies before New Game+.
