There is no official ranking of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s party. This list is an editorial ranking that weighs combat usefulness and flexibility alongside narrative impact. Those are separate judgments: a character can be a standout in the story without being the best fit for every three-person battle party.
Spoiler note: The character discussion below may reveal broad story themes, but avoids major plot twists.

How this ranking works
Expedition 33 lets players recruit six characters, but only three fight at a time, according to PlayStation’s game page. Its official overview describes builds shaped by gear, stats, skills, and character synergies, so a character’s value depends partly on who shares the active party and how they are developed. The game also offers Story, Expeditioner, and Expert difficulties, which can be changed at any time; that makes any claim of a universally strongest character too broad.
The order below is a considered overall judgment, not a developer verdict, community consensus, or claim that one lineup is optimal for every player. Combat placement reflects potential contribution, flexibility, and usefulness in a three-slot team; narrative placement reflects character development and emotional impact. The official sources describe reactive turn-based combat—including dodging, parrying, countering, attack rhythms, and free-aim weak-point targeting—but do not establish character-by-character performance rankings.

The party members, ranked
Roster caveat: PlayStation’s page confirms six recruitable characters, but its English cast passage names only Gustave, Maelle, Lune, Sciel, Verso, and Renoir—and naming a character in a cast list does not establish that the character is recruitable. The sources available for this article do not verify the complete six-character playable roster. Rather than guess at the missing name or invent a full ordering, this ranking covers only the five characters the cited official page names in that passage. It is therefore not a complete ranking of every party member.
1. Maelle
Maelle takes the top spot as the strongest overall editorial pick: a ranking should reward a character who can matter both as a combat choice and as a central part of the game’s character drama. This is not an evidence-backed claim that she deals the most damage or outperforms the others in a particular build. The official material cited here does not provide that comparison, so her placement is a judgment rather than a mechanical verdict.
Rank #2
- Reactive Turn-based Combat - In this evolution of JRPGs, real-time actions enhance the heart of turn-based combat. Build your party and level up six characters. Craft unique builds for your expeditioners that fit your playstyle via gear, stats, skills, and character synergies. Open an active dimension in combat - dodge, parry, and counter in real time, chain combos by mastering attack rhythms, and target enemy weak points using a free-aim system.
- “Tomorrow Comes” - With only one year left to live, join Gustave, Maelle, and their fellow Expeditioners as they embark upon a desperate quest to break the Paintress’ cycle of death. Follow the trail of previous expeditions and discover their fate. Get to know the members of Expedition 33 as they learn to work together against impossible odds.
- A Hauntingly Beautiful World - Explore an enchanting realm populated by surreal adversaries. Wander through breathtaking landscapes, from the Island of Visages to the Forgotten Battlefield, discovering secrets and hidden quests along the way. Find allies of fortune in creatures of legend and recruit a special companion who can access new travel methods and secret areas in the World Map.
- Experience the debut game from Sandfall Interactive, fully realized in Unreal Engine 5 with stunning graphics and a heartbreaking soundtrack.
- European/ UK version
2. Sciel
Sciel ranks second for the same broad balance of party appeal and narrative presence. In combat, her value should be considered in the context of the other two active slots and the player’s build choices—not as a fixed tier position independent of team composition. No official character-by-character data in the cited sources establishes that she is objectively second-best.
3. Lune
Lune sits in the middle of this overall list: a compelling party member, but one whose precise combat standing cannot responsibly be quantified from the official sources cited here. The game’s build system makes flexibility and synergy relevant criteria, but without verified character-specific skills or performance figures, assigning her a firm mechanical rank would overstate the evidence.

4. Verso
Verso is fourth in this editorial ordering, not because the source material demonstrates that he is a weaker combatant. The ranking reflects an overall judgment across combat potential and characterization, while leaving room for players to value those dimensions differently. A different build, difficulty setting, or two-character combination around him could change his practical value to a player.
5. Gustave
Gustave rounds out this partial list. That position is not a claim that he is the least effective playable character: the official sources cited here do not compare the five characters’ combat output, survivability, or skill options. His placement is only the final slot in this subjective overall ordering of the five names confirmed in the cited cast passage.
Rank #4
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is a ground-breaking turn-based RPG with unique real-time mechanics, making battles more immersive and addictive than ever.
- Explore a fantasy world inspired by Belle Époque France in which you battle devastating enemies.
Combat strength and story impact are different rankings
“Best party member” can mean the character who contributes most in a difficult fight, the easiest to fit into a preferred build, or the one whose story resonates most. These are not interchangeable measures. The official overview supports comparing characters through builds and synergy, while PlayStation’s cast introduction frames the ensemble through shared loss and different ways of responding to it: “Every character has been affected by deep and constant loss and has dealt with this in their own way.” That is an official article statement, not a developer quote.
For choosing a battle party, start with the three-person limit and ask how each character fits the other two slots. Consider what your build needs, how you use the game’s reactive combat, and which difficulty setting you have selected. The cited official pages do not support a detailed ability guide or a definitive mechanical tier list, so a precise claim about the best damage dealer, support, or boss-killer would need stronger character-specific evidence.
