If Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 crashes when you start it on Steam Deck and Steam Overlay is disabled, Sandfall Interactive’s documented fix is to enable the overlay and verify the game files in Steam. That fix is specific to the startup issue described in the developer’s 24 April 2025 notice; it is not a universal solution for every crash. Other Deck-related reports concern menu graphics or prerequisite setup, not game stability.
First, identify when the failure happens
“Crashing on Steam Deck” can describe different problems, and the available fixes apply to different symptoms. Note when the game fails: at launch, during prerequisite installation, after loading a save, in a cutscene, or in a particular area. Also record the error message, game build, SteamOS version, Proton version, and whether the problem began after an update. The documented fixes below do not establish one current cause for all Deck crashes.
Startup crash when Steam Overlay is disabled
Sandfall Interactive’s 24 April 2025 notice addressed players who experienced crashes on startup with Steam Overlay disabled. The team said it had deployed a fix and asked affected players to verify their game files in Steam. Follow those steps if your symptoms match that notice; the source does not claim they resolve crashes at other stages.
- Check the overlay setting: in Steam, open the game’s properties and confirm Steam Overlay is enabled for the game.
- Verify the installation: open the game’s Steam properties, go to Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam finish before trying to launch again.
The notice is reproduced in SteamDB’s record of Sandfall’s 24 April 2025 update. It is a historical, symptom-specific fix, so an unsuccessful result does not rule out another cause.

If the problem is not a startup crash
Menu backgrounds are missing or displayed incorrectly
Sandfall’s Patch 1.2.3 notes, dated 9 May 2025, list a fix for Steam Deck menu backgrounds that were not displaying properly. This is a graphics and interface correction, not a general crash fix. Make sure the game is updated if you are seeing that specific display problem.
You cannot finish prerequisite installation with the controller
A report about the 8 May 2025 Proton Experimental update says it enabled Xalia for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, allowing controller users to complete prerequisite installation. This concerns navigating setup, not a fix for crashes during ordinary gameplay. Steam Deck HQ’s report describes that change.

The game crashes in a cutscene, after loading, or in a particular area
The cited official Deck-specific notices do not establish a fix for these distinct symptoms. Avoid assuming that the Overlay fix, menu-background patch, or Proton setup change applies. Community discussions mention approaches such as Proton GE, Desktop Mode, and launch options, but these are anecdotal and mixed rather than confirmed universal remedies. Check whether your installed game and SteamOS have updated, then document the exact reproduction steps before seeking support.
When the documented steps do not help
- Record the precise point of failure, any error text, the game build, SteamOS version, Proton version, and what changed before the issue began.
- Use the game’s Steam technical support page to contact the listed support provider, Sandfall Interactive. Steam lists [email protected] and identifies Kepler Interactive as publisher.
- Include concise reproduction steps and clarify that you are playing on Steam Deck. This helps support distinguish a Deck-specific problem from a crash affecting other platforms.
Do not apply the Sirene crash notice as Steam Deck guidance
A 17 March 2026 notice for Patch v1.5.3 discusses a crash after defeating Sirene. The team said it could no longer reproduce that issue and suggested updating Windows if it continued. The notice is not Steam Deck-specific, so its Windows suggestion should not be treated as Deck troubleshooting. See the Patch v1.5.3 notice for its stated platform context.
