Can I Beat a 4-Star Raid Alone in Pokémon GO?

Some Pokémon GO raids can be soloed, but the label “4-star” does not determine whether your team can beat a specific boss.

Sometimes—but “4-star” alone isn’t enough to tell you. Pokémon GO’s current Help Center lists standard tier 1, 3, and 5 raids alongside named Mega categories, rather than a general current tier 4. Players may use “4-star” informally to mean a Mega raid. Whether you can win solo depends on the exact raid boss and your team.

What does “4-star raid” mean in Pokémon GO?

In the current Raid Battles overview, Pokémon GO describes standard tiers 1, 3, and 5, as well as Mega categories. Its raid types guide also names Mega, Mega Legendary, and Super Mega Raids. These official categories do not establish a universal “4-star” solo rule. Some players use that phrase as shorthand for Mega raids, but the label is ambiguous.

Check the raid’s in-game name and identify the boss before choosing counters. A star label or informal description cannot tell you whether your particular team can win.

What determines whether you can win alone?

The boss, its moves, your Pokémon’s types, levels and attacks, and the conditions of the battle all affect the result. Niantic’s general guidance is to use attacks that are super effective against the boss’s type or types. That is a starting point, not a guarantee: without the exact boss and team, there is no reliable universal counter list or minimum level to give.

Raid battles use a party of six Pokémon. The Help Center says higher-difficulty raids have stronger bosses and generally call for more Trainers, but that general guidance does not prove that every raid in a category requires a group. Some bosses may be soloable by well-prepared players; others may not be realistic for your lineup.

How to prepare for a solo attempt

  1. Confirm the raid type and boss. Check the in-game raid label and the boss’s types. Do not assume “4-star” means the same thing as a named raid category.
  2. Build a team of six with type-effective attacks. Choose Pokémon whose attacks exploit the boss’s weaknesses. Niantic’s raid-boss advice recommends super-effective attacks.
  3. Consider a Mega-Evolved Pokémon. Niantic notes that Mega bonuses may help your team, but a Mega Pokémon does not guarantee a solo win.
  4. Dodge charged attacks when it helps your team stay in battle. Swiping left or right can reduce the damage your Pokémon take, according to Niantic. Dodging also takes time and attention, so weigh the survival benefit against the time lost.
  5. Use the raid timer to decide whether to rejoin. If your team faints or the attempt fails, you can leave to heal and rejoin while the raid is active. Niantic says your pass grants access for the duration of that raid, so you do not need another pass to rejoin.

Check for special raid mechanics

Do not assume every raid follows the same battle rules. In Shadow Raids, bosses can become enraged; Niantic says a Purified Gem helps subdue them. Check the raid type and its mechanics before applying standard-raid advice.

For Mega Raids, the Help Center says the time taken to win affects Mega Energy rewards. That reward consideration is separate from whether your team can defeat the boss solo.

When should you try it alone?

A solo attempt makes sense when you know the exact boss, have a prepared team with effective attacks, and are comfortable spending time on a possible relobby. Treat success as uncertain unless you have boss-specific evidence for your team and conditions. Community reports can show that a particular solo has been achieved, but they are examples—not a guarantee for another player’s lineup or circumstances.

For a useful solo estimate, compare the raid category and special mechanics, the boss’s defensive typing and moveset, your available counters and their levels and moves, any active weather or other bonuses, and whether you can afford time for relobbies. A star label by itself does not answer the question.
