How Black Ops 6 connects the games
Black Ops 6 follows Black Ops Cold War in the series’ chronology, then leads toward Black Ops II’s later story. The link is not only chronological: Black Ops II includes 1980s flashbacks, which the publisher says connect directly to the years after the Cold War and the period leading into Black Ops 6. The official reveal frames the new campaign around the end of the Cold War and the United States’ emergence as the remaining superpower.
What is happening in the 1991 campaign
The Gulf War forms the public backdrop, while a clandestine force has infiltrated high levels of the CIA. Frank Woods and his team are branded traitors and hunted. After an operation goes wrong, Woods and his protégé Troy Marshall are suspended and forced to go rogue, according to the publisher’s campaign setup.

Their team includes CIA handler Jane Harrow, technical specialist Felix Neumann, and assassin Sevati Dumas. Russell Adler also returns, but the publisher’s setup leaves his allegiances and motivations unclear. The game describes its campaign as a spy-action thriller; that label and the setup are detailed in the official reveal and campaign recap.
Campaign chronology is separate from Zombies
The 1991 placement describes the campaign, not every mode in the game. Black Ops 6 Zombies continues the separate Dark Aether storyline and is set more than half a decade after Black Ops Cold War’s Zombies events, according to the publisher’s Zombies recap. Treat its continuity as distinct from the campaign timeline above.

A useful play order for the story
For the shortest context before Black Ops 6, play the original Black Ops and then Black Ops Cold War. Play Black Ops 6 next; Black Ops II helps explain the later 2025 timeline and its 1980s flashbacks. This is a suggested route based on the publisher’s chronology, not an official required order. Black Ops 6 launched worldwide on October 25, 2024, as stated in the publisher’s launch announcement.
