Can You Allow Cheats in Minecraft After Creating a World?

You can enable commands after creating a Minecraft world. The steps vary by edition and multiplayer setup, and Bedrock cheats permanently disable achievements in that world.

Yes. You can enable commands in an existing Minecraft world, but the setting depends on whether you play Java or Bedrock Edition and whether the world is single-player, open to LAN, or hosted by someone else. Before enabling cheats in Bedrock, note that doing so permanently disables achievements in that world—even if you turn cheats off later.

Enable commands in an existing single-player world

Java Edition

  1. Open the world’s options.
  2. Turn on Allow Commands.

Minecraft’s official commands guide says you can enable commands later if they were not enabled when the world was created.

Bedrock Edition

  1. Open the existing world’s settings.
  2. Select the Game tab.
  3. Turn on Allow Cheats.

Important: Minecraft’s official guide says enabling cheats will permanently stop players from unlocking achievements in that world, even if you turn cheats off again later.

Let players use commands in a LAN world

Java Edition

  1. While in the world, open the in-game menu and select Open to LAN.
  2. Set Allow Commands as desired for players joining the LAN world.
  3. Start the LAN world.

The command setting must be configured before you start the LAN session. See Minecraft’s server and LAN instructions.

  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Bedrock Edition

  1. From Play, select the pencil icon beside the existing world.
  2. Open the Multiplayer tab.
  3. Turn on Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players, then start the world.

These options make the world available to players on the local network; command use remains subject to the world’s permissions. Minecraft’s Bedrock LAN guide covers making an existing world visible.

Realms and other hosted servers

In a Realm or server, being able to use commands depends on your multiplayer permission level. Owners generally have permission by default; if you are a guest on someone else’s world or server, ask its owner or administrator to grant access. Changing a setting on your own device does not override the host’s permissions.

If the setting is missing

  • Check whether the world is Java or Bedrock Edition; the labels differ: Allow Commands in Java and Allow Cheats in Bedrock.
  • For Bedrock LAN play, check the world’s Multiplayer settings as well as the command permissions.
  • For a Realm or server, contact the owner or administrator rather than changing local world settings.

Menu layouts can vary by platform and game version. If the exact path differs, look in the existing world’s settings and confirm which edition you are using before changing anything.
