Compatible physical Nintendo Switch game cards work in Nintendo Switch 2, and digital games can be downloaded by linking the Nintendo Account that bought them. Saves are separate: moving a game or its license does not automatically move your progress. Nintendo warns that compatibility varies by title, so check its current list before relying on a specific game.
What transfers—and what does not
“Transfer a game” can mean getting access to the game, moving saved progress, or moving your whole console setup. These are separate actions.

- Physical games: Keep the Switch game card and insert it into Switch 2. Nintendo confirms that Switch game cards can be inserted to play, subject to compatibility. The card does not carry your save data. Nintendo’s game-transfer guidance.
- Digital games: Link the Nintendo Account that purchased the game to Switch 2, then download the game. Access to the purchase is separate from saved progress. Nintendo’s game-transfer guidance.
- Virtual game cards: Nintendo’s system lets you load or eject eligible digital games and DLC between linked Switch and Switch 2 consoles. A loaded virtual game card can be used offline and by other users on that console, but it does not carry a save file. Nintendo’s virtual game card guidance and Nintendo Switch 2 FAQ.
- Save data: Save files are managed separately from the game. Nintendo says saves remain on the original console when a virtual game card is loaded elsewhere. Use nearby-console save transfer or, for supported games, cloud saves. Nintendo’s save-transfer instructions.
- Full system transfer: Nintendo offers a transfer during Switch 2 setup. The local and server-upload methods have different consequences for the source console and saves, so read the prompts for your chosen method before starting. Nintendo’s system-transfer instructions.
Check compatibility before you count on a game
Switch 2 can play compatible Switch games, but Nintendo does not guarantee that every title will run or work fully. Hardware differences can affect compatibility, and individual games may have specific software or peripheral requirements. Check the current, title-specific status in Nintendo’s compatibility information; the guidance may change as Nintendo updates it.
Choose the right method
| Your situation | What to do | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| You own a physical Switch game | Insert its game card in Switch 2. | Compatibility varies, and the save is separate. Nintendo compatibility information. |
| You own a digital game and want to play it on Switch 2 | Link the purchasing Nintendo Account, then download the game. | Game access does not itself move saved progress. Nintendo’s game-transfer guidance. |
| You want to use digital purchases on both consoles | Manage the games as virtual game cards on linked consoles. | Loading a virtual game card does not move the save. Nintendo’s virtual game card guidance. |
| You want to continue one game’s save | Use nearby-console save transfer or a supported cloud save. | Nearby transfer moves the save off the source; cloud saves require membership and game support. Nintendo’s save-transfer instructions. |
| You are replacing your whole console | Use system transfer during Switch 2 setup. | Review the local and server-upload options and their source-console effects first. Nintendo’s system-transfer instructions. |
Move an individual save
Nearby save-data transfer is the direct option when you want to move progress for a particular game without transferring the whole system.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Connect both consoles to the internet and keep them near each other.
- Make sure the relevant users are linked to the same Nintendo Account.
- Follow Nintendo’s nearby save-data transfer instructions on the consoles.
- Check the target console before proceeding if it already has a save you want to keep. The transfer moves the save and deletes it from the source; it is not a copy.
This nearby transfer does not require Nintendo Switch Online. The alternative cloud-save route does require an active Nintendo Switch Online membership, and only games that support cloud backup can use it. Nintendo’s save-transfer guidance.
When a full system transfer makes sense
Choose system transfer when you are moving to Switch 2 and want to follow Nintendo’s console-migration process rather than handling game access and saves one by one. Nintendo documents local communication and server upload during Switch 2 setup. With server upload, the source console is initialized after the upload. The local method has special rules for saves that are not backed up to the cloud and accounts not linked to a Nintendo Account. Review Nintendo’s current setup prompts and system-transfer instructions before choosing; digital software is downloaded onto Switch 2 after setup.

Storage and Switch 2 Edition notes
If a download needs more space, account for Switch 2’s storage requirements: Nintendo says the console is designed for microSD Express cards, and conventional microSD cards are not supported for game storage on Switch 2. You do not need an additional card just to access a digital license, but available space can affect downloading software. Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information.
A Switch 2 Edition is distinct from ordinary access to a Switch game. Nintendo says a Switch 2 Edition game card inserted into an original Switch runs as the Switch version, without Switch 2-only content and features. Nintendo Switch 2 FAQ.
