A Hong Kong Nintendo Switch can generally be used in the United States. The main practical issues are the Hong Kong-shaped plug on its included AC adapter, regional rules for eShop purchases and add-ons, and warranty coverage: Nintendo Hong Kong says overseas use is not covered by its warranty or service.
Power: the adapter supports US voltage, but the plug is different
Nintendo Hong Kong identifies the supplied Switch adapter as model HAC-002(UKV). Its input rating is 100–240 V, which includes US mains voltage, but the adapter has a Hong Kong-specific three-pin plug. You will need a suitable plug adapter to connect it to a US outlet; the voltage rating does not make the plug physically compatible.
Nintendo Hong Kong says a travel power converter/adapter is needed for overseas use and does not guarantee the behavior of overseas conversion equipment. Check that any plug adapter fits securely and is rated for the electrical load. Nintendo does not identify or endorse a particular third-party adapter. Its adapter guidance is on Nintendo Hong Kong’s overseas-use page (Chinese-language; adapter details translated from that page).
Physical games: most cartridges are not region locked
Nintendo says Switch game cards are not region locked, with an exception for consoles and game cards distributed in the Chinese region. The company also cautions that it has not tested every overseas game on every regional console and cannot guarantee complete service or support for every combination. This is general Nintendo guidance, not a specific guarantee for every Hong Kong-console and US-game pairing.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Before buying an imported game, check the game box or, on the console, open the game’s Software Information and look at Support Information for the supported region. Do not assume the general cartridge rule applies to China-region products. Nintendo’s regional compatibility FAQ explains the exception and compatibility caveat.
eShop purchases depend on your Nintendo Account country
The Nintendo Account country determines which Nintendo eShop you access. If you change the country on your account, the corresponding eShop is available the next time the console connects, after you accept the applicable account agreement and privacy policy. The system’s region setting is separate; changing it does not itself change the account country used for the eShop.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Plan account changes before spending any eShop balance: Nintendo says the balance does not transfer when you change your account country. Payment methods and prepaid cards also have regional limits. Nintendo eShop cards are country- or region-specific, and a card bought for the wrong region cannot be exchanged or refunded by Nintendo. A credit card issued for one region generally will not work in another region’s eShop. See Nintendo’s regional FAQ and account-country guidance before switching regions or purchasing cards.
DLC and download codes must match the game or eShop region
Downloadable content works only with the game released for the same region as that DLC. Download codes must be redeemed through an eShop matching the game’s region. Nintendo Switch Online membership codes are region-specific too: codes for the Americas can be redeemed by accounts set to countries in the Americas; codes from outside the Americas work only with accounts set to those regions.

- Play your way with the Nintendo Switch gaming system. Whether you’re at home or on the go, solo or with friends, the Nintendo Switch system is designed to fit your life. Dock your Nintendo Switch to enjoy HD gaming on your TV. Heading out? Just undock your console and keep playing in handheld mode
- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
For an imported cartridge, check its region before buying DLC or a code. A US eShop purchase may not work with a game released for another region. Nintendo details these limits in its regional compatibility FAQ and download-code guidance.
System region is a separate setting
Nintendo lists Japan, the Americas, Europe, Australia/New Zealand, and Hong Kong/Taiwan/South Korea as selectable system regions. Changing the system region requires accepting the End-User License Agreement for the selected region. This setting is distinct from your Nintendo Account country, which controls the eShop you access. Nintendo’s system-region instructions describe the available choices.

Warranty and accessories: expect regional limits
Nintendo’s Americas limited warranty applies only in the country or region where the console was intended to be sold. Nintendo Hong Kong separately states that overseas use is not covered by its warranty or service. If the Hong Kong console needs attention in the US, local paid repair may be necessary; no particular repair provider is established here.
Some accessories purchased overseas may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility across regions. It recommends licensed accessories sold in the same country as the console and warns that unlicensed accessories may void the console’s limited warranty. These limits are described in Nintendo’s regional FAQ and Nintendo Hong Kong’s overseas-use guidance.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
What to check before bringing one to the US
- Confirm the included adapter is HAC-002(UKV), rated 100–240 V, and use a suitable plug adapter for the US outlet.
- Check the region of physical games, especially before buying DLC or redeeming codes.
- Review your Nintendo Account country, eShop balance, and payment method before changing account country.
- Factor in that Nintendo Hong Kong warranty and service coverage do not extend to overseas use.
