In the base game, you can buy a horse at a stable outside a major city. When you fast-travel to a city, the official Skyrim manual says your horse is left at the stable outside its gates. Add-ons offer other options, but they are separate from the ordinary stable horse.
How to get and keep a horse
- Visit a stable outside a major city and buy a horse. The official Skyrim manual gives this as the standard way to purchase one: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim manual.
- When you fast-travel to a city, look for your horse at the local stable outside the city gates. That is the travel behavior described in the manual.
This answers the basic question for the ordinary horse you buy at a stable. It should not be taken as a guarantee about every horse acquired through a quest, add-on, or mod.
What Hearthfire and Anniversary Edition add

Which edition do you need?
For the basic stable horse, the manual’s instructions are for Skyrim; the reviewed material does not require Anniversary Edition. If you want its added horse content, check the product listing for your platform and edition before buying. Bethesda says the Anniversary Edition includes Skyrim Special Edition plus Creation Club content, while the Digital Upgrade requires ownership of Special Edition: Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition purchase information.
What is not established about horse behavior
The official material cited here does not comprehensively explain what happens to every named or special horse if it dies, you switch mounts, leave it after dismounting, or use mods. It also does not establish universal assignment behavior between every mount and every home stable. Those cases should not be inferred from the manual’s city fast-travel rule.
