Yes. PlayStation 2 consoles can play DVD-Video discs, but a particular disc may not work with every PS2. Region coding, the console’s market and video standard, disc type, and disc condition can affect playback.
How to play a DVD on a PS2
- Place the DVD in the tray with its label facing up, then close the tray. Playback should start automatically if the disc is compatible.
- To control playback with a DUALSHOCK 2, press SELECT to display the on-screen control panel, then use the controller to choose a function.
- Follow the DVD’s own instructions for title-specific features. Sony notes that a PS2 plays content as recorded in the DVD software and that not every DVD feature is available on every console.
Sony also documents a separately sold DVD remote as an option; a remote is not required to watch a DVD.
Why a DVD might not play
Check the disc and console before assuming the PS2 cannot play DVDs. Sony identifies the disc’s broadcast standard, region code, format, and content as compatibility factors.
- Console market and video standard: Find the console’s SCPH model and consult the manual for that model and sales region. A Sony quick reference for the PAL-market SCPH-90004 says that model plays PAL DVDs; that limitation should not be applied to every PS2.
- DVD region: Commercial DVDs may be region-coded. Sony explains that a player and disc with incompatible region codes may not play together.
- Disc type and finalization: Sony’s cited quick reference lists DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW, but says recordable discs must be finalized to play. Do not assume every recordable disc or recording will work.
- Condition and recording: Dust, scratches, or recording problems can prevent playback. The same quick reference says certain CPRM-protected recordings are unsupported.
Is a DVD remote necessary?
No. The DUALSHOCK 2 can operate the on-screen DVD control panel. If you prefer dedicated controls or need a replacement remote, Sony’s SCPH-10420 manual documents the optional remote, but compatibility varies by PS2 model series. Check its compatibility information against your console before buying.
