Yes—but only specific mattocks can be augmented in RuneScape 3 (RS3). The dragon, crystal, and imcando mattocks, Mattock of Time and Space, and Guildmaster Tony’s mattock are eligible; standard metal mattocks are not.
Which mattocks can you augment?
The RuneScape Wiki’s Archaeology guide lists these eligible mattocks:
- Dragon mattock
- Crystal mattock
- Imcando mattock
- Mattock of Time and Space
- Guildmaster Tony’s mattock
Standard metal mattocks cannot be augmented. Eligibility depends on the specific mattock, not simply on having a mattock equipped.
How to augment an eligible mattock
- Reach level 22 Invention to discover mattock augmentation, as stated in the Archaeology guide.
- Use an augmentor on one of the eligible mattocks listed above.

How do you add perks?
Augmenting a mattock does not automatically give it perks. The guide says tool gizmos can be made at the same Invention level and added to an augmented mattock to provide perks. The gizmo is the step that adds perks; augmentation makes the eligible mattock usable with this system.
