Yes, on a Steam Deck you can use Steam as the launch interface for World of Warcraft installed through Battle.net. That is different from downloading or updating WoW through Steam: Blizzard’s installation route is the Battle.net desktop app, and adding it to Steam does not turn it into a Steam purchase. Valve documents support for running non-Steam games through Proton on Steam Deck, but the sources do not establish WoW-specific Deck certification or guaranteed performance.
What “playing WoW on Steam” means
There are two possible meanings to the question: installing the game from the Steam store, or launching it from Steam’s library. Blizzard says all versions and game modes of World of Warcraft are installed through the Battle.net desktop app. The official installation route described there is Battle.net, not Steam.
Steam can act as a library interface for a non-Steam app. Valve explains that adding a non-Steam game does not make it a Steam purchase, provide Steam downloads or updates, or prove ownership through a Steam account. WoW remains installed and managed through Battle.net even if you add the launcher to Steam.
Can you play it on Steam Deck?
Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says, “Yes, you can run non-Steam games through Proton.” That general support makes a Battle.net-based WoW setup possible: install the game through Battle.net, then add the launcher as a non-Steam app so it appears in the Steam interface. This is not a WoW-specific compatibility guarantee. The official pages cited here do not establish Deck certification, a supported SteamOS configuration from Blizzard, current performance, or a tested set of compatibility settings. Exact installer steps and troubleshooting can also change, so a general Proton recipe should not be treated as an official WoW setup guide.
How installation and updates work
- Install World of Warcraft through the Battle.net desktop app. Blizzard’s installation instructions cover all WoW versions and game modes there: World of Warcraft installation.
- Add the Battle.net launcher to Steam as a non-Steam application if you want it in Steam’s library. On a Deck, Valve documents adding non-Steam apps and running them through Proton; the launcher shortcut is an interface convenience, not a Steam game listing.
- Use Battle.net for WoW installation and updates. Steam’s non-Steam feature does not distribute the game or its updates. Valve’s explanation is in Steam Support’s non-Steam game FAQ.
Valve also describes adding installed apps to the Deck interface in its Steam Deck desktop FAQ. The official material does not supply a current WoW-specific installer walkthrough or identify particular Proton settings that are guaranteed to work.

Using Steam as a launcher does not change Blizzard’s access requirements. Blizzard says Modern WoW can be downloaded and played free through level 20. WoW Classic versions and selected game modes require game time or a subscription. Because the available modes can change, check Blizzard’s current WoW news and mode information alongside its installation page before choosing a version.
