A Microsoft or Xbox gift card works differently: it adds money to your account balance rather than directly adding Game Pass time. The account you use matters too—redeem only while signed in to the Microsoft account or Gamertag that should receive the code.
Does a Game Pass code extend an active subscription?
Microsoft Support’s current instruction for a prepaid subscription code is to turn off recurring billing on the existing subscription, then redeem the code after that subscription expires. Microsoft does not direct users to redeem the prepaid code immediately while the current subscription is still active, so do not assume that every code will stack or extend active time.
Check the subscription under Microsoft account > Services & subscriptions. Follow Microsoft’s steps to turn off recurring billing, then wait until the current subscription expires before redeeming the prepaid code. See Microsoft’s subscription payment and options guidance.
First, identify what kind of code you have

Microsoft’s code redemption instructions cover redeeming codes and gift cards. For account balance, Microsoft explains that the balance can be used for eligible purchases, including Xbox-related subscriptions, in its account balance guidance.

How to redeem the code on the right account
- Confirm the code type. Check whether it is a prepaid subscription code or a Microsoft/Xbox gift card. Review the code’s plan, region, eligibility, and retailer terms if they are not clear.
- For a prepaid subscription code, check the subscription. Open Microsoft account > Services & subscriptions, turn off recurring billing as Microsoft directs, and wait for the existing subscription to expire.
- Sign in to the intended account. Use the Microsoft account or Gamertag that should receive the subscription or balance.
- Redeem the code. Use Microsoft’s code redemption flow and follow its prompts. If redemption in an app fails, use the web redemption option and confirm that the correct account is signed in. Microsoft’s redemption troubleshooting guidance provides that alternative.
- For a gift card, check the balance. The value is added to the signed-in account. You can use it toward an eligible Xbox subscription purchase if you choose.
What if the code is rejected or its terms differ?
Do not assume that a rejected code can be converted, stacked, or applied to a different plan. Check that the code matches your account’s country or region and subscription eligibility, and review any retailer restrictions. If the code’s plan or terms remain unclear, contact Microsoft Support. Microsoft’s published instruction covers the general prepaid-code timing, but it does not establish one universal stacking or conversion rule for every code and plan combination.
