GPS spoofing, modified software and unauthorized add-ons are among the prohibited behaviors. Possible consequences range from restricted gameplay to suspension or permanent account termination.
What counts as cheating in Pokémon GO?
Niantic defines cheating as conduct that violates its Terms of Service, Player Guidelines or Live Event Code of Conduct. Its Gameplay Fairness Policy names falsifying your location with GPS spoofing and gaining unauthorized access to game clients or backends, including through third-party software or add-ons.

The Player Guidelines identify other examples of prohibited conduct:
- Using modified or unofficial software.
- Using multiple or shared accounts to circumvent gameplay.
- Intentionally exploiting bugs for rewards.
- Manipulating matchmaking, outcomes, rankings or other competitive systems.
- Abusing refunds.
- Buying, selling or trading accounts, currency or items where prohibited by the guidelines.
Niantic’s guideline is direct: “Don’t deny yourself or someone else a fair gameplay experience by cheating.”

Does Niantic still ban players for cheating?
Niantic’s published policy describes account enforcement that can escalate, but it does not promise that every case receives each stage in sequence. Its violation guidance says actions can include warnings, degraded gameplay, suspension and permanent termination.

The durations are approximate policy periods, not a guarantee of how a particular case will be handled. Niantic says serious misbehavior can result in immediate termination, so players should not count on receiving three chances.

Can you tell which cheats work right now?
Not from Niantic’s public policy pages. They establish what is prohibited and describe possible enforcement, but do not confirm whether a particular spoofing app, modified client or other method currently functions. Niantic also says it does not publicly discuss internal detection mechanisms or the specifics of individual incidents in its ban appeal guidance.
Those sources also provide no verified detection rate, prevalence figure or basis for estimating the odds that a specific account will be caught. Claims that a tool is working, undetectable or “safe” from a ban are therefore not established by Niantic’s published information.

What to do if you think a ban was a mistake
If you believe Niantic terminated your account in error, use its web-based ban appeal process. Niantic does not publish internal detection details, so an appeal is the route it provides for contesting an account action.
