No. Iron golems cannot spawn on top of sea lanterns: the Minecraft Wiki’s block-properties page lists sea lanterns as an excluded spawning surface. The lantern can be nearby, but it cannot serve as the block beneath the golem’s spawn location.
Why sea lanterns do not work as a spawning floor
The Minecraft Wiki’s block-properties page explicitly excludes sea lanterns from blocks iron golems can spawn on top of, despite the block’s legacy solid property. In a farm, keep sea lanterns out from under the intended spawn locations and use a block accepted by the game instead.
What else an iron golem needs to spawn
Changing the floor block is not enough by itself. The Minecraft Wiki iron-golem farming guide describes a valid block beneath the candidate location and sufficient open space around and above it. The precise conditions depend on the edition and whether you are relying on village spawning or a farm design.
Java Edition
The guide describes Java Edition golems being summoned by villagers and gives a candidate spawning volume around them. A valid surface and clearance must fall within the applicable conditions; a sea lantern under the candidate location still disqualifies that surface.

Bedrock Edition
The guide describes village-based requirements: at least 20 beds and 10 villagers, at least 75% of villagers having worked at workstations the previous day, all villagers linked to beds, and an available spawn point within the village-centered volume. These are edition-specific game-mechanics criteria, not requirements to apply to Java farms.
How to troubleshoot a farm with sea lanterns
- Identify whether the world is running Java Edition or Bedrock Edition; the village and villager conditions differ.
- Remove sea lanterns from beneath the intended spawn locations and replace them with a block accepted for iron-golem spawning.
- Check that the candidate locations have enough unobstructed space around and above them for the golem.
- Check the relevant edition’s villager or village requirements and the farm’s spawn area; a valid floor alone does not make a spawn happen.
What the sources establish
The sea-lantern exclusion and broader farm guidance come from community-maintained Minecraft Wiki pages. The cited passages do not specify a current game version, so they establish the documented rule without confirming a version-specific change history. Minecraft’s official iron-golem article explains golem context and how players can create one, but it does not establish the sea-lantern spawning rule.
