What “master” means—and what locks a profession
A villager’s profession and trading level are separate. Master describes its trading level; it is not, by itself, the reason the profession is locked. The relevant condition is whether you have completed a trade with that villager. The Minecraft Wiki summarizes the rule as: “So, once a player trades with a villager, the villager keeps its profession forever.”
Removing a workstation does not provide a way to change the profession of a villager you have already traded with. It can make an eligible villager with no prior trades unemployed instead.
How to change an untraded villager’s profession
- Check the trade history. If you have completed a trade with the villager, it will keep its profession under the described mechanics.
- Remove its current job-site block. An eligible adult villager that has not been traded with may become unemployed.
- Place the job-site block for the profession you want. The workstation determines the profession when the villager claims it. Keep nearby job sites in mind: another villager may claim an available block instead.
- Choose the villager’s offers before trading. The Minecraft Wiki’s trading-hall tutorial recommends changing the job block before the first trade. Trading once locks in the profession under the described rule.
Who cannot change profession?
Baby villagers and nitwits cannot change profession. The reassignment steps apply to eligible adult villagers that have not been traded with.

Why job-site blocks may behave differently by edition
Java and Bedrock do not handle job-site claiming in exactly the same way, according to the Minecraft Wiki’s general summary. Java villagers seek nearby unclaimed job sites and pathfind to them; Bedrock uses a shared list of valid sites, and a villager may claim one without reaching it. The summary is not pinned to a specific game version, so check your edition and build when a workstation is claimed unexpectedly or the behavior differs from these steps.
