Yes. Most mods can be removed, but the right steps depend on the game, platform and where you installed the mod. Start in the game’s mod or Creation menu, or in the manager or subscription service you used to add it. Before opening a save that used the mod, back up the save if possible: it may rely on that content, and removing the mod does not guarantee the save will continue to work.
Before uninstalling a mod
- Identify how it was installed. Note the game, platform and mod source: an in-game menu, subscription service or mod manager. The safest first step is usually to undo the installation through that same route.
- Decide whether to disable or remove it. If you are troubleshooting and your game supports disabling, try that first. It lets you test whether the mod is causing a problem without immediately removing it. In Skyrim Special Edition, Bethesda distinguishes disabling a Creation from removing one in its Creation instructions.
- Back up important saves. Make a separate backup if your game and platform allow it. A save can depend on a mod; SEGA warns that a current save may require a new campaign after a mod is removed. Check advice for your specific game before continuing a modded save.
How to remove a mod
- Open the game’s mod or Creation menu, or launch the manager or library through which you installed the mod.
- Choose the option to remove, uninstall or deactivate the mod. If the platform uses subscriptions, unsubscribe as directed by that service. SEGA recommends removing or deactivating through the mod manager first and unsubscribing when appropriate; see its mod support guidance.
- Restart the game and check whether the mod is gone. If it remains, do not immediately delete files by guesswork. Look up the publisher’s current instructions for that exact game and platform.
- If you want to continue a save that used the mod, test with a copy or backup where possible. If the save reports missing content or will not load, restore the mod or use an unaffected save, then follow the game’s official support guidance. There is no universal recovery method.
Disable or uninstall: which should you choose?

Why a mod may remain after removal
Unsubscribing or removing a mod in one place does not always clear every local file. For example, Bethesda’s PC troubleshooting instructions for Skyrim Special Edition describe unsubscribing and deleting mod-related files from specified directories. Those steps are specific to that game and setup, not general instructions for other titles. Follow Bethesda’s Skyrim Special Edition guidance rather than applying its file paths to another game.
On consoles, mod storage and save data are not interchangeable. Bethesda’s Xbox guidance for particular games discusses clearing Reserved Space and warns users not to delete actual save data. Its support pages also describe reinstalling a particular game on PlayStation if Creations cannot be removed in-game. Console menus and instructions can change, so use the current support steps for the exact game and console; do not treat a storage cleanup as permission to erase saves.
Manager removal versus manual file cleanup
On PC, remove a mod through the manager that installed it first. This gives the manager a chance to update its own profile and subscription state. Consider manual cleanup only if the manager leaves files behind or the game publisher’s instructions specifically call for it. SEGA recommends manager-based removal first, while Bethesda documents additional file cleanup for Skyrim Special Edition PC installations.
