Usually, yes: you can play Grand Theft Auto V Story Mode offline, but the answer depends on your platform and whether your copy has been activated and its entitlement verified. GTA Online always requires an internet connection. PC players may also need to reconnect periodically, and Rockstar’s current support guidance adds an access caveat for Story Mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What “offline” means in GTA 5
Offline play means the single-player Story Mode, not GTA Online. Rockstar says Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection on PC, while GTA Online requires internet access. See Rockstar’s PC offline-mode guidance and its GTA Online activation guidance.
Playing GTA 5 offline on PC
Set up offline launch in Rockstar Games Launcher
Rockstar’s instructions, last updated February 28, 2025, are to sign into Rockstar Games Launcher, enable the offline launch argument, then start the game:
- Sign in to Rockstar Games Launcher while you have an internet connection.
- Open Settings, then select Grand Theft Auto V.
- Enter
-scofflineonlyunder Launch Arguments. - Launch the game from Rockstar Games Launcher or your preferred launcher.
For GTA Online, Rockstar Cloud save synchronization, or game updates, close the game, remove -scofflineonly, then relaunch after reconnecting.

- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Offline mode does not bypass license checks
Rockstar says PC copies require periodic entitlement verification over the internet. After reconnecting and verifying entitlement, you can play offline again. The launch argument does not validate an unverified copy or guarantee indefinite offline access. Rockstar also notes that offline play is only available for games that support it, and that some games or modes require an internet connection for activation or gameplay. Read its PC entitlement verification guidance and Rockstar Games Launcher offline guidance.
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have a Story Mode access caveat
Rockstar’s support article, last updated November 11, 2025, says GTA Online is required to play GTAV Story Mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It also says players whose Story Mode access came through a free-trial campaign or a subscription such as GTA+, Game Pass, or PlayStation Plus may need to purchase GTA Online to resume access to their Story Mode progress. This guidance is specific to those platforms and access circumstances; it does not establish one offline rule for every console edition or every account. Check the edition and entitlement on your account in Rockstar’s Story Mode access article.

Do you need a Rockstar Games account?
Rockstar says a Rockstar Games account is required on PC for installation, online play, and certain online features. On console, it says a Rockstar account is not required to play Story Mode, although some online features do require one. An account does not replace other platform, ownership, or activation requirements. See Rockstar’s account requirements.
