Yes. Japanese Nintendo Switch game cards generally work on European Nintendo Switch consoles; Nintendo’s stated exception is consoles and game cards distributed in China. That does not guarantee every game’s features or support, and it does not mean every Japanese release includes English. Check the exact game’s supported regions and languages before buying, and match any DLC to the game’s region.
Will a Japanese Switch game card work on a European console?
In general, yes: Nintendo says Switch game cards are not region locked, except for consoles and cards distributed in China. You do not need to change your console’s region just to play a Japanese card.

Compatibility is not a guarantee of complete functionality or support. Nintendo UK cautions: “Although Nintendo Switch software sold in regions outside of Europe will work with Nintendo Switch consoles sold in Europe, we have not tested all overseas software with consoles from all regions and cannot guarantee full service and support.” This is a general qualification, not confirmation that every Japanese title has been tested.
How to check a particular game before buying
- Check the package. Look for the game’s supported regions and language information on its packaging or listing.
- If you already own the game, check its support information. On the console, open the game’s Options menu, choose Software Information, then Support Information. Nintendo says supported regions are listed there for most games.
- Verify the exact Japanese release’s languages. A game uses the console’s selected language only if the software supports that language. Nintendo’s general rule does not establish whether a particular Japanese edition includes English.
- Check online features and other title-specific behavior separately. Nintendo’s general guidance does not settle every release’s online functions, updates, or other features.
For the region and support guidance, see Nintendo UK’s Nintendo Switch Regional Compatibility FAQ. For the language rule, see Nintendo Support: Can I Play My Game in Another Language?

Will Japanese Switch games have English?
Sometimes, but do not assume so. The console’s language setting is used only when the game supports that language. Check the language details for the specific Japanese release: language options can vary by edition, even when a game has the same title in Europe and Japan.
Will Japanese DLC work with a European game?
Nintendo says downloadable content must match the game’s region. A Japanese DLC purchase may not work with a European game copy, even if the title names are identical. Compare the supported regions shown for the game and the DLC before purchasing. Nintendo explains this check in its Digital Content is Missing from Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch (Games, DLC, Etc) support article.

Does the console’s region setting affect game cards or the eShop?
System region and eShop country are separate settings. A physical card generally does not require a system-region change. The Nintendo Account’s country determines which eShop you use; changing the account country after relocating changes the eShop the next time you connect, and any account balance does not carry over. Nintendo also says eShop cards can be used only in the country or region for which they were intended.
Nintendo Spain lists the console’s supported system-region settings and explains the agreement and restart steps for changing region in Cómo cambiar la región de la consola Nintendo Switch. Do not change system region or Nintendo Account country on the assumption that a Japanese physical card needs it.
