You can buy Minecraft, but you do not need to pay for a Microsoft account: Microsoft accounts are free. The supported route is to buy the game for your platform—or redeem a legitimate game code—while signed into the account you want to keep using. Buying someone else’s login credentials is different from buying the game license, and official Minecraft guidance does not establish that a transferred account will be safe or recoverable.
What does “buy a Minecraft account” mean?
People use the phrase to mean two different things: buying the Minecraft game license, or paying for another person’s account credentials. The official purchase route is to buy the game or redeem a code on an active Microsoft account that you control. A Microsoft account itself is free. Minecraft’s account guidance and its account creation guide explain the distinction.
Because a pre-made account listing is a transfer of credentials rather than the official game-purchase flow, do not assume it will work or that you will be able to recover the account. The official materials do not settle every third-party resale scenario, so the reliable option is to buy the game entitlement for your own account.
How to get Minecraft through the official routes

Buying Minecraft for PC
The official PC product is Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC. Minecraft describes Java as available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, while Bedrock is available on Windows and other listed platforms. Check the product page for the current platform details. When buying, stay signed into the Microsoft account that should own the game.

Redeeming a code or prepaid card
- Check that the code is for the platform and region you need.
- Sign into the Microsoft account you want associated with the game.
- Follow the steps on Minecraft’s code redemption page and redeem the code once. A redeemed code cannot be used again.
Trying the game first
If you are unsure whether to buy, check the official free-trial page for a trial on your device. Minecraft describes the trial as a way to experience core Survival gameplay; device support and limits vary, so confirm them on that page.
Already own Minecraft on PC?
You generally do not need to buy the PC game again just because you are using a new computer. Sign into the same Microsoft account used for the original purchase and install the game. Minecraft’s PC product page provides this same-account reinstall guidance.

What changes on consoles?
On console, the platform account handles access to the console version. A free Microsoft account can also be used to sign into Minecraft for cross-platform features. Online multiplayer may require a separate subscription from the console platform; check the current requirements for your console and region. What about an old Mojang account?
Do not buy a listing on the assumption that an old Mojang account can still be migrated. Minecraft announced that account migration concluded on September 19, 2023; unmigrated accounts can no longer use that migration process. Read Minecraft’s migration notice.

Which account terms apply?
Minecraft’s EULA says Microsoft accounts are used for Microsoft platforms and are required for purchases made through Minecraft.net, Microsoft Store, or Xbox. For purchases on platforms such as PlayStation, Nintendo, Apple, Google Play, or Steam, the terms of that platform apply. See the Minecraft EULA for the relevant account terms. These terms do not establish that every third-party account transfer is safe or permitted, so avoid treating a resale listing as an official purchase route.
