Yes. The Pokémon HeartGold Version Nintendo DS game card plays on Nintendo 3DS-family systems, including 3DS and 2DS. The game runs as Nintendo DS software, though its Game Boy Advance Dual Slot link feature is not available on 3DS.
What you need to play HeartGold on a 3DS
You need the Nintendo DS game card for Pokémon HeartGold Version. It is not a Nintendo 3DS game card. Nintendo’s HeartGold manual identifies it as a DS game, and the Nintendo 3DS operations manual confirms that 3DS systems accept Nintendo DS and DSi Game Cards.

Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says DS games work on 3DS-family systems, with exceptions for a few titles that require the AGB (Game Boy Advance) slot. HeartGold’s GBA-related feature is optional for basic play, so its absence on 3DS does not stop the game from running.
What changes when you play it on 3DS
It runs as a DS game, not a 3DS game
HeartGold displays in 2D and at a lower resolution than native 3DS software. Nintendo says you can hold START or SELECT while the game is loading to display DS software in its original resolution. The image may appear smaller on the screen in that mode.

GBA Dual Slot linking is unavailable
HeartGold can use its Dual Slot function to link with Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, FireRed, LeafGreen, or Emerald cartridges. The HeartGold manual states that this function is available only with Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite systems. You can still play HeartGold on a 3DS, but cannot use that GBA-cartridge link feature there.
Some 3DS system features are unavailable during play
While DS software is running, the HOME Menu, SpotPass, and StreetPass are unavailable. DS and DSi software also does not display in 3D, according to Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and 3DS operations manual.

How to start the game
- Insert the Pokémon HeartGold Nintendo DS game card into the game-card slot of your 3DS-family system.
- Choose the game from the HOME Menu and start it.
- If you want the original DS resolution, hold START or SELECT as the game loads.
Nintendo’s compatibility documentation establishes system support, but it does not verify the authenticity or condition of any particular used game card.
