Yes—players without premium Minecraft accounts can join an Aternos Java Edition server if its owner enables the Cracked (online-mode) option. That setting disables account authentication, so someone can join using another player’s username. It is a server-owner choice, not a way to make a non-premium account authenticated.
How to let cracked players join an Aternos server
Only the server owner can change this setting. Aternos saves Options-page changes automatically, but the server must be restarted before they take effect.

- Open the server in Aternos and go to Options.
- Enable Cracked (online-mode). Aternos explains the setting in its online-mode guide.
- Restart the server. Aternos says changes made on the Options page require a restart.
- Once the server is online, give players the address displayed on its server page. With Cracked enabled, that address includes a port.
These instructions concern Aternos Minecraft: Java Edition servers; they do not establish equivalent support for Bedrock Edition.
What changes when Cracked mode is enabled?
In authenticated online mode, Minecraft verifies a player’s account. Cracked mode disables that check. Aternos warns: “Enabling cracked mode disables player authentication, allowing anyone to join with any username, even impersonating other players.”

That means the username shown in game is not proof of who connected. A player could choose the name of an operator or another member. Treat this as a deliberate security trade-off, not merely a compatibility switch.
Why a whitelist is not enough
A whitelist limits access by username, but it does not verify identity when authentication is disabled. Aternos warns that someone can set their launcher username to a whitelisted player’s name and bypass the whitelist.

Aternos recommends adding a login plugin such as OpeNLogin; its cracked-mode guidance also names AuthMe Reloaded. These plugins add a separate login step. They do not restore Minecraft account authentication or make a cracked-mode server equivalent to authenticated online mode. Follow the plugin’s setup instructions and check that it supports your server software and version.
Possible effects on OP, whitelist, and player data
Aternos warns that changing the Cracked setting can cause fundamental changes to how player identities are handled. OP and whitelist entries may stop working as expected, and player data—including inventory, position, and achievements—may be lost.

If OP or whitelist entries no longer work after switching modes, Aternos says to remove the affected players from those lists and add them again. Do not assume that existing player data will automatically carry over unchanged.

Errors such as “Invalid Session,” “Invalid Token,” or “Failed to verify username” mean the server could not verify the account. The right fix depends on whether the player uses a premium account or a cracked client.

For a premium account
- Close Minecraft and all launcher processes, reopen the launcher and game, then try again.
- If the username was recently changed, log out of the launcher and back in so it refreshes the account session.
For a cracked client or launcher
Aternos says cracked players must be enabled to resolve this class of verification error for cracked clients. Aternos also explicitly says it does not recommend using cracked Minecraft. Enabling the option has the identity and data trade-offs described above.
If the connection still fails
- Check that the server is online and use the address shown on its Aternos server page, including the port if displayed.
- If the address does not connect because of DNS caching, try Aternos’s DynIP alternative, described in its online-mode guide and connection guidance.
