If you have the Steam version, first verify its files; if it still fails, try Windows XP Service Pack 3 compatibility on the single-player executable. That compatibility setting helped one player, but it is an anecdotal workaround, not a guaranteed solution. The right next step depends on whether you see a black screen, an immediate exit, or a DirectX error.
Start with the copy you have and the exact failure
Call of Duty 2 was released for older Windows versions. Its published PC minimum requirements specify Windows 2000 or XP and DirectX 9.0c; they do not guarantee compatibility with Windows 10. Steam’s Call of Duty 2 listing identifies the game and its single-player mode.

Determine whether your copy is installed through Steam or from the original disc, then note what happens when you start single-player:
- Black screen: the game appears to open but shows no usable picture.
- Immediate exit: it appears to launch, then closes or returns to the Steam library.
- Named missing file or DirectX error: record the exact message and file name before changing anything.
- No game window: note whether the launch fails silently or displays an error.
These symptoms have appeared in individual player reports, but those reports do not establish how common the problems are or that one fix works for every case. A Steam Community discussion includes reports of a black screen and a game returning to the library.

If you have the Steam version, verify the game files
Use Steam’s file verification before editing game files or changing executable settings. The option is in the game’s Properties; Steam checks the installation and can restore files it finds missing or damaged. This step applies to Steam installations, not the original disc copy. A Steam Community guide also recommends file verification as a troubleshooting step.
Try compatibility mode on the single-player executable
A player reported that setting CoD2SP_s.exe to Windows XP Service Pack 3 compatibility helped their Steam installation. Treat this as a test, not an official or universal fix. The player report does not establish that the setting resolves other symptoms, Windows 10 builds, or editions.

- Open the Call of Duty 2 installation folder and locate
CoD2SP_s.exe, the single-player executable. - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open the Compatibility tab.
- Select the option to run the program in compatibility mode, then choose Windows XP (Service Pack 3).
- Apply the change and launch single-player to see whether the original symptom changes.
- If it makes no difference or causes a new problem, return to the Compatibility tab and undo the setting.
A Steam Community guide also suggests running the game as administrator. This is community advice rather than a confirmed Call of Duty 2 fix; test it only if the compatibility-mode check does not resolve the issue, and undo the change if it has no effect. If an error names DirectX, check Windows’ DirectX information
Use Microsoft’s DxDiag guidance to check which DirectX components Windows reports. Press Windows key + R, enter dxdiag, and press Enter to open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Its information can help distinguish a general launch failure from an error naming a particular component. Microsoft explains how to use DxDiag and the DirectX versions included with Windows.

Windows 10 includes DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12, but older games may still depend on legacy DirectX 9 libraries. The Windows DirectX version alone therefore does not prove that every older component a game needs is present. Do not download individual DLL files from untrusted sites; use Microsoft’s diagnostic and installation guidance instead.
What Windows 10 update advice does—and does not—establish
Activision advises updating Windows 10 for stability issues affecting some Call of Duty games. Its guidance does not specifically mention Call of Duty 2, so it should not be treated as a game-specific fix or compatibility guarantee. Read Activision’s general update guidance.

What these steps cannot guarantee
The available guidance does not establish one fix that works across Windows 10 builds, game editions, graphics drivers, and failure types. The XP compatibility setting and administrator suggestion come from community troubleshooting, while Microsoft’s DirectX advice is diagnostic rather than a Call of Duty 2-specific repair. No particular graphics card, controller, or accessory is established as necessary to make single-player run.
