Install the Minecraft Launcher on the new PC and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns Minecraft for PC; the game should be available in that account’s library to download. Your worlds are separate from the purchase, so move or restore them separately using a method that fits your Minecraft edition and devices.
Reinstall Minecraft on the new computer
- Download and install the Minecraft Launcher on the new PC.
- Sign in with the same Microsoft account used to purchase Minecraft for PC.
- Open the Launcher’s library and install the game. Minecraft’s PC store page says a purchased game should appear there for download: Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC.
This restores access to the account’s PC game entitlement; copying the old installation folder is not how the purchase transfers. If the game is not listed, first check that the Launcher is signed into the purchasing account.

Choose a world-transfer method for your edition
Before moving a save, identify whether the old computer runs Java Edition or Bedrock Edition. Minecraft describes Java Edition as available for Windows, Mac, and Linux, while Bedrock is available on several other platforms, including Windows. The editions use different multiplayer servers and cannot join each other’s games, so do not assume their save files are interchangeable. See Minecraft’s Java and Bedrock edition guide.
Minecraft’s new-device guidance describes cloud storage, physical storage, and Realms as possible transfer routes depending on the device and platform: How to transfer Minecraft to another device. The specific steps below cover Java saves copied between computers and Bedrock worlds transferred through Realms.

Move a Java Edition world between computers
Minecraft Help’s instructions are to move a compressed backup to the new computer, extract it, and place the folder containing the world in that computer’s Java saves directory. On Windows the path is %appdata%.minecraftsaves; on macOS it is ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves. The world should then appear in Singleplayer. The guidance is on Minecraft Help’s localized page: transfer Java worlds to another device.
- On the old computer, create or locate a backup of the world and copy the compressed backup to a safe transfer location, such as cloud storage or physical storage.
- On the new computer, extract the backup. Locate the world folder inside it; place that folder, rather than an unextracted archive, in the Java
savesdirectory. - Start Java Edition and check the Singleplayer list for the world.
Keep the original world and backup until the copied world opens successfully on the new computer. The exact menus may vary by operating system or game version.

Move a Bedrock world with Realms
Minecraft documents a Realms upload-and-download route for Bedrock worlds. It requires an active Realms trial or paid subscription, and both devices must be updated to the newest game version. The downloaded world is a copy: Minecraft Help: managing data and game storage.
- On the old device, sign in with the Microsoft account you will use on the new device, open the world’s settings, and upload the world to a Realm.
- On the new device, install the same Bedrock game version, sign in with that Microsoft account, and download the world from the Realm.
- Open the downloaded copy and confirm it loads before removing or changing the original.
Realms is one documented option, not a requirement for every Bedrock transfer. Other supported export/import or storage methods depend on the devices involved; consult Minecraft’s device-transfer guidance for the applicable route.

If you no longer have access to the purchasing account
Older Java owners who never migrated a Mojang account should not expect to recover it through the former migration process. Mojang account migration ended on December 18, 2023, and Minecraft Support says it no longer assists with migration-related queries. Minecraft also notes that a Java world may remain stored locally even if its owner cannot play it without Java Edition purchased through a Microsoft account.
