Sometimes, but Xbox has not guaranteed that every Xbox 360 game’s update is still available. The Xbox 360 Store stopped accepting new purchases on July 29, 2024; that change did not stop previously purchased games from being played or redownloaded. Those assurances do not establish that every title-update file is still being served. To check a particular game, connect your Xbox 360 to the internet and launch it; an update may be offered, but one is not guaranteed.
What the Xbox 360 Store closure changed
On July 29, 2024, Xbox ended new purchases of games, downloadable content, and other entertainment through the Xbox 360 Store and Xbox 360 Marketplace. The closure was about buying new content through those storefronts, not a blanket shutdown of Xbox 360 games. Xbox’s closure announcement and its final update on the closure say previously purchased content remains playable; Xbox also says players can redownload purchased digital content.

- Physical discs: Xbox says disc games can still be played on Xbox 360.
- New store purchases: No longer available through the Xbox 360 Store or Marketplace after the closure date.
Are game updates still downloadable?
Xbox’s public closure statements do not specifically guarantee that the update file for every individual Xbox 360 game remains available. Being able to play a game or redownload a purchase is not proof that its separate title update is still hosted. Availability may depend on the specific game, and the cited Xbox statements do not provide a title-by-title update list.
How to check a particular game
- Connect the Xbox 360 to the internet.
- Start the game. If an update is offered, follow the console’s prompt to download and install it.
- If no update prompt appears, that does not establish whether the game is already current or whether an update is unavailable; the official closure statements do not provide a universal check or availability list.
Updates, multiplayer, and backward compatibility are separate
Online multiplayer
Playing multiplayer is a separate issue from downloading a title update. Xbox says multiplayer can continue for purchased games as long as the publisher still supports that game’s online servers. A working update download does not itself establish that servers are still operating, and server availability is not guaranteed for every title. Xbox’s closure FAQ sets out this publisher-support condition.

Playing on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S
Some Xbox 360 games are backward compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, but not the entire Xbox 360 library. For supported disc games, the newer console downloads the compatible version, and the disc must remain inserted to play. Check the official backward-compatible games list for a specific title. This compatibility is distinct from whether an update is available for that game on Xbox 360.

What to check when a game will not update
- Confirm the console is connected to the internet, then launch the specific game to check for an offered update.
- Separate the question of updating from access to the game: Xbox says previously purchased digital content can be redownloaded, and physical discs remain playable.
- If your goal is multiplayer, check whether that game’s publisher still supports its online servers; the store closure announcement makes that support the condition for continued play.
- If you are using a newer Xbox, verify that the title is on the supported backward-compatible list rather than assuming every Xbox 360 game works there.
