Yes—under Minecraft’s classic villager-trading rules, a librarian can offer an enchanted book with Protection IV. With the optional Villager Trade Rebalance experiment enabled, however, the Plains librarian’s guaranteed Master-level book is Protection III, not Protection IV. What you can expect depends on your edition, version, and whether the experiment is on.
How Protection IV librarian trades work
With classic trading rules, a librarian’s enchanted-book offer is randomized: both the enchantment and its level can vary. Protection IV is therefore possible, but it is not a guaranteed offer. The cited librarian reference describes classic book-trade probabilities for Java and Bedrock, but those slot probabilities are not an overall chance of getting Protection IV. See the librarian trade reference.
If you do not see Protection IV, continue checking the librarian’s book offers under classic rules. The available evidence does not establish a single overall probability for receiving that exact enchantment and level.
What changes with Villager Trade Rebalance
Villager Trade Rebalance is an optional experiment, not the default behavior in the cited release notes. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.20.2 notes say the experiment changes librarian trades by biome and removes some enchantments from village trading. The notes also state, “This experiment has no effect on normal worlds.”

The Bedrock 1.20.30 announcement likewise describes the rebalance as experimental, with biome-based librarian books and special guaranteed books at Master level. It says players must turn on the experiment in the Experiments Menu to test the new trades.
The Plains Master book is Protection III
In the cited rebalance trade table, the guaranteed special book for a Plains Master librarian is Protection III. That trade does not meet a specific need for Protection IV. The table does not establish that every other possible trade route in every rebalance configuration is incapable of producing Protection IV, so do not treat the Plains guarantee as a complete ruling on all versions or editions.

How to check which rules your world uses
- Identify whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and note the game version.
- Check whether Villager Trade Rebalance was enabled for the world. In Bedrock, the cited 1.20.30 announcement places the toggle in the Experiments Menu; Java 1.20.2 describes it as an experiment that has no effect on normal worlds.
- If the experiment is off, check librarian book offers under classic trading rules; Protection IV is possible but not assured.
- If the experiment is on, do not rely on the Plains Master librarian’s guaranteed book for Protection IV; the cited table identifies it as Protection III. For certainty beyond that trade, check the exact version’s behavior.
Applying the book to armor
Once you have a Protection IV book, apply it to an eligible armor item using an anvil. Microsoft’s enchantment reference lists helmets, chestplates, leggings, boots, and turtle shells as Protection-compatible armor.
