In Skyrim’s Dawnguard storyline, becoming a Vampire Lord removes your lycanthropy. Aela can restore your werewolf form afterward, replacing vampirism, but the cited game reference describes that restoration as a one-time opportunity.
What happens when you change forms?
Werewolf and Vampire Lord are not ordinary simultaneous conditions on this route. Dawnguard reference material says accepting Vampire Lord status removes lycanthropy; asking Aela to restore lycanthropy later cancels vampirism. The Elder Scrolls Wiki’s lycanthropy reference describes Aela’s restoration as a one-time return, so it is not a repeatable way to alternate between the two forms indefinitely.
Vampire Lord is a Dawnguard feature, alongside its own skill tree; the Dawnguard expansion overview outlines the expansion’s transformation content. Depending on your quest route, you may be offered Vampire Lord status by Harkon or receive it through Serana. The Elder Scrolls Wiki’s Vampire Lord reference covers the form.
How to return from Vampire Lord to werewolf
- Speak with Aela and ask her to restore your lycanthropy.
- Accept the restoration if you want to become a werewolf again; this replaces vampirism.
The one-time limit is reported by the game reference, rather than stated as an official Bethesda support guarantee. The available sources do not establish whether perk progress or powers are retained across these changes, so do not assume they will carry over.

How to stop being a vampire without becoming a werewolf
If you want to end vampirism without taking werewolf status, Bethesda Support gives the option of speaking with a Priest of Arkay in a capital city. Bethesda’s vampirism and lycanthropy cure instructions describe that route.
There is also a Dawnguard quest route: the “Rising at Dawn” walkthrough directs you to Falion in Morthal and requires a filled Black Soul Gem for the cure. This is a cure option, not a way to repeatedly restore both transformations.
