No documented Nintendo-supported method lets a Switch Lite act as a controller for a separate Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s published setup instead shows the Lite as the console, with external Joy-Con or a Pro Controller paired to it. The conclusion about using the Lite as a controller is an inference from Nintendo’s documented configurations, not an explicit Nintendo statement ruling it out.
Why the Switch Lite is not a documented controller for another Switch
Nintendo describes Switch Lite as a handheld system and documents how to connect compatible external controllers to it. Its support instructions do not describe sending the Lite’s built-in controls to another Switch. Nintendo also states that Switch Lite does not support TV Mode in its Play Mode Options Overview on Nintendo Switch.

That means there is no documented, supported setup to use a Lite as a separate console’s gamepad. If you want to play on a Lite using a different controller, Nintendo documents wireless Joy-Con and Pro Controller pairing instead.
Controllers you can pair with Switch Lite
Joy-Con
Nintendo supports wireless Joy-Con pairing with Switch Lite. Whether a particular arrangement works depends on the game: titles may support Joy-Con held together, or individual Joy-Con used horizontally. Check the game’s controller and multiplayer details before buying or pairing extra controllers. See Nintendo’s Joy-Con compatibility information.

Pro Controller
Nintendo also supports pairing a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller wirelessly with the Lite. Wired use requires a licensed accessory: Nintendo names the HORI Dual USB PlayStand for Nintendo Switch Lite as an example. Instructions are on Nintendo’s controller support page.
How to pair Joy-Con with Switch Lite
- On the Lite, open the HOME Menu and select Controllers.
- Select Change Grip and Order.
- Press and hold the Joy-Con’s SYNC button until it appears on screen.
- Follow the on-screen prompt to confirm the grip orientation. Nintendo’s full instructions are on its Joy-Con support page.
How to connect a Pro Controller
Wireless connection
- On the Lite, open Controllers from the HOME Menu, then choose Change Grip and Order.
- Press and hold the Pro Controller’s SYNC button and follow the on-screen prompt.
Wired connection
For wired play, place the Lite on a licensed accessory such as the HORI Dual USB PlayStand for Nintendo Switch Lite, then connect the Pro Controller using its USB charging cable. A cable alone is not the documented wired setup for the handheld; see Nintendo’s controller support instructions.

Check game support and controller limits
System-level controller capacity does not tell you how many players a particular game supports or which controller layouts it accepts. Confirm the game supports the controller arrangement you intend to use.
- Nintendo says up to eight wireless controllers can usually connect to a Switch system, though the actual limit varies by controller type and features.
- When Bluetooth audio is connected, the system is limited to two wireless controllers.
These are general system limits, not a promise that a game supports eight players. Nintendo’s controller compatibility information covers the system-level qualifications.

Which setup should you choose?
